October 2, 2006 - Tony Jones has made Perris Auto Speedway his “home away from home” this season, winning five of the last 10 USAC/CRA Sprint Car races conducted on the half-mile dirt oval. He returns there this Saturday for another shot at victory lane.
The occasion is the opening night of the 2006 Southern California Fair, which runs from Oct. 7-15 at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds and the theme of this year’s fair is “Rev Up The Fun.”
Jones scored his fifth victory of the season last Saturday night, leading wire-to-wire to beat Danny Faria, Blake Miller, Rip Williams and series point leaders Cory Kruseman and Damion Gardner. The fifth and sixth-place finishes for the point leaders leaves Kruseman nursing a slim two-point lead going into Saturday’s races.
Gardner is the defending USAC/CRA Champion and led the standings for most of the year, but he and Kruseman are destined to battle for the championship right down to the Nov. 18 finale at The PAS.
Jones ranks third in the standings and is not eliminated from title contention yet. He trails the leaders by 161 and 159 points respectively but continued victories could help him close that gap.
Chad Boespflug was last Saturday’s fast qualifier.
