March 13, 2006...A month ago, Cory Kruseman led Damion Gardner by a single point in the USAC CRA Sprint Car standings. Going into this Saturday night’s race at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz., the roles are reversed, with Gardner one point ahead!
It’s expected to be that kind of season in one of America’s most competitive series. A 30-lap feature is on tap at the 1/2-mile dirt Manzanita oval Saturday.
Kruseman and Gardner finished second and fourth at Manzanita in January behind race winner Levi Jones. Gardner won three times in eight Phoenix starts last year, while Kruseman’s best finish there in 2005 was a third.
Gardner also has resumed his incredible qualifying performance on the heels of last year’s record 22 fast qualifying times. Nobody has out-qualified him in three 2006 appearances, and that includes a 58-car field at Perris, Calif. March 4! Damion has finished fourth-second-second in this year’s three CRA features.
Although the two have distanced themselves from the field in terms of points, Mike Spencer stands 44 points behind Kruseman after finishing sixth-fifth-fifth in this year’s events.
