BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 30, 2006) – Each year a fair number of fans make
their way to Bloomington Speedway primarily to see one of the best fireworks
shows around, courtesy of Bloomington Power Sports. However, by the
time that they return home, many of them realize that the fireworks on the track
were far more exciting than those in the sky above the infield. Many
of them leave the track after that first visit as confirmed racing fans.
Mike Miles knows that a single visit is ofter all that is needed to turn a
slightly interested visitor into a confirmed race fan. That, after
all, is the plan.
While we believe the races to be
a better show, the fireworks were, indeed, impressive. The ooh and
aah meters were pegged for the entire duration of the show. It's
great to see the wide smiles on the face of everyone in the stands when the
lights come back on..
It was a beautiful evening.
The racing was great. And, everyone on the hillside left having
received much more than their ten dollars worth.
SPRINT CARS -
The sprint car competition at
Bloomington Speedway has been fierce all season; and it seems to get tougher the
deeper into the season that we get. A total of 42 cars unloaded to
compete for the first place money up for grabs last night. However,
most of them were looking for something even more important to a racer - their
first Bloomington Speedway feature win.
Jon Stanbrough started the
evening off by winning the first heat race from his outside front row starting
position. Brent Beauchamp and Ty Decard took the other two transfer
spots for from the first heat. Danny Holtsclaw, Dickie Gaines,
Hunter Schuerenberg, amd Brad Sweet won the other four heat races.
The first fifteen cars for the feature event had been determined.
The first ten cars would be determined by the redraw; however, those fifteen
knew that they were in the show.
The final six drivers would come from the two
"B" features. However, the tough part of that is that
there were twenty-seven drivers battling for those final six spots.
Brady Short and Jared Fox started
up front in the first "B' feature. They both have first class
equipment and a lot of laps on the Bloomington Speedway red clay.
When the green flag waved they charged into the lead; and they finished as they
started - in front. Kenny Carmichael, Jr. edged sixteen year old
Chris Babcock for the final transfer spot from the first "B" feature.
Steve Rone and Kerry Kinser
started on the front row of the second "B"; and they finished first
and third respectively, earning their feature berths. However, Bobby
Stines came from his tenth place starting position to finish second
in his "B" feature. The other nine drivers would join the
eleven drivers who failed to transfer from the first "B" feature in
packing up and watching the the feature event.
The first ten starting positions
were determined by a redraw among the first two drivers from each of the five
heat races. Josh Cunningham pulled the number one pill to earn the
right to start on the pole. Four time Bloomington
Speedway sprint car champion Kevin Briscoe would share the front row with
Cunningham. The other eight drivers would fill the next four
rows. From the start, it was a battle between Josh Cunningam and
Kevin Briscoe. Jon Stanbrough who started fourth moved up to joint
the fray fairly quickly. On lap 17 Stanbrough passed Briscoe
to take second place and started to duel with Cunningham for the lead.
However, on the 20th circuit, Jon made a bobble and dropped back several
spots. This returned the task of taking the win away from Cunningham
to Briscoe.
Briscoe tried every line that he knew; but he was
unable to get past Josh.
The win was Josh's first ever on the red clay;
however, everyone knew that it was coming. Going into last night's
competition, Josh had five consecutive top ten finishes. He drove a
near perfect race; and he held off two of the toughest racers at Bloomington
Speedway. Briscoe held on to take second place trailed by Brad
Sweet, Stanbrough, and Hunter Schuerenberg.
