BLOOMINGTON, IN (May 26, 2006) – Going into the biggest racing weekend
of the season, it was apparent that the hardcore race fans could not get started
too soon. The hillside was full of peopled who knew that they might
well see the best racing of the weekend on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway
last night.
One of our regular fans, Dave
Foist, is a director of the Association of Race Fan Clubs; and he will have to
be at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a breakfast this morning.
This was after spending all day at the speedway for carb day. He
indicated that he considered missing our show last night. He
commented, "I thought about missing tonight; but, as I was getting ready to
leave the speedway, one of my buddies told me that he had heard a rumor that
Mike Miles was going to cancel the races because he heard that I wasn't
coming. I couldn't let that happen."
Of course, Dave was exaggerating;
but we have a lot of fans who are just about that loyal; and we can't say too
often how much we appreciate them.
SPRINT CARS -
Kevin Briscoe has been the man to
beat at Bloomington Speedway for years. Of course, he hasn't always
won the championship. However, that has often been because he missed
a race or two. However, last night's race was the sixth of the
season; and Kevin had not yet scored a feature win. From 2000
through 2005, the latest Kevin won his first feature was the third race of the
season. More than likely neither Kevin nor his father could tell you
why they got a slow start this season. If they knew, they would have
done something about it. Of course, the fact that Jon Stanbrough and
Dick Gaines II have been red hot might have had a little something to do with
it.
The luck of the draw gave Kevin a
sixth place starting position in his heat race. He finished second
to Jon Stanbrough who had started on the outside of the front row.
The redraw that aligned the front
of the sprint car feature put Hunter Schuerenberg and Brady Short on the front
row with Briscoe and Kenny Carmichael, Sr.in the second row and Jon Stanbrough
and Derek Scheffel in row three. When the green flag dropped to
start the feature, Schuerenberg took the lead with Briscoe and Brady Short in
tow. At the end of the second lap, Kevin was in the lead ahead of
Short, Schuerenberg, and Carmichael, Sr. At the end of
the tenth circuit, the first four cars were the same; but Stanbrough had the
Danny Roberts sprinter in fifth place. On the 12th lap Stanbrough
passed Carmichael to take fourth. On the 14th lap Stanbrough took
third. On the 15th lap Carmichael took fourth.
They would run in that order until the checkered flag waved. While
all of the frontrunners kept Briscoe in range, Kevin was not going to be denied
his first feature win of the season.
In preliminary action, Short,
Stanbrough, and Carmichael, Sr. took the heat races while Bobby Stines prevailed
in the hoolidgan.
