 Press Release

IT'S TWO FOR GAINES
BLOOMINGTON, IN (April 28, 2006) – As we arrived at the track and looked at the line of haulers waiting to enter the pits, it looked as if we might not have the car count that we had had the first two weeks.   There would still be plenty of cars; but there might not be as many as we had the first two weeks.   However, the cars just kept coming.   When it was time for hot laps there were 48 sprint cars and a good field of O'Neal Wood Products modifieds and Tire and Wheel Center super stocks as well.

The track was a little wetter than Mike Miles had intended to begin with.   About the time that he finished watering the track the skies became overcast and the wind died.   However, by feature time the track was near perfect.

SPRINT CARS -

Dan Roberts' 21x was one of the first cars in the pits; and Darrell Tate was preparing it for competition.   Dick Gaines II would be there to climb into the car in time for hot laps.   The team would be looking for their second feature win in three attempts.   The only driver who had beaten Gaines this season at Bloomington Speedway, Jon Stanbrough, was among the missing.

Richard Briscoe was also there with a brand new car for Kevin. Dick Briscoe never seems to thrash; but the car is nearly always very fast.   However, some of the credit for that has to go to Kevin.   In any event, both Dick and Kevin have a lot of laps on the red clay; and they're tough to beat.

Tom Busch started on the pole of the first heat; and he managed to hold off Dick Gaines II who started fourth to secure the heat race win.   Kenny Carmichael, Sr. also won his heat from the pole, beating out A.J. Anderson.   Brent Beauchamp came from fourth to win his heat race, while Hunter Schverenberg came from fifth to win his heat.   Kevin Briscoe won the final heat starting on the outside of the front row.

With only fifteen of the 48 sprint cars transferring to the feature, there were 33 drivers battling for one of the six spots that would transfer to the feature out of the two "B" features.   Kent Christian, Chris Windom, and Steve Rone transferred from the first "B" feature while Kevin Chambers, Cole Whitt, and Danny Holtsclaw made the cut from the second "B" feature.   A lot of good cars and drivers were left with nothing left to do but load up and watch the feature.

The redraw to align the front half of the field put Kenny Carmichael and Kenny Carmichael, Jr. on the front row for the feature event.   The elder Carmichael confirmed that this was the first time that they had shared the front row for a feature event.

Dick Gaines II did not have a lot of luck in the redraw as he had the ninth place starting position for the feature.   However, Gaines and the Danny Roberts owned/Darrell Tate wrenched team can win from anywhere in the field.

When the green flag waved Carmichael, Sr. won the drag race to the first turn to secure the initial lead.   However, the action stopped when a car got crossed up and collected Steve Rone who got upside down ending his evening a little early.   When the action resumed Carmichael, Sr. still had the point; however, by the time the third lap went into the books, Dick Gaines II had moved into second place and was reeling Carmichael in.

Everyone knew that Carmichael would be facing an uphill battle to hold off Gaines for 22 laps; however, many of the fans on hand almost certainly hoped that he would be able to sew up his first Bloomington Speedway feature win.   However, on the 12th circuit Gaines passed Carmichael to take the lead that he would hold until the checkered flags flew.

Tom Busch had passed Carmichael, Jr. to take third on the seventh circuit and went after the elder Carmichael.   But, on the 21st lap, the younger Carmichael passed Busch to recapture third place.

The race was interrupted for the final time on the 23rd lap when Joss Moffatt and Kevin Chambers tangled in the third turn with both of them getting on their lids.   Moffatt, displaying a typical driver's optimism, stayed strapped in the car as the sprinter with his helmet on as if he expected his crew to perform minor repairs and shove him off again.   It didn't work out; but you have to give Moffatt credit for his competitive spirit.

The late race yellow left the field with a three-lap shootout for the feature win.   However, as exciting as those three laps were, the first five spots remained unchanged.   It was Gaines, Carmichael, Sr., Carmichael, Jr., Tom Busch, and A.J. Anderson.
