September 5, 2005...Kody Swanson leads the Valvoline USAC Western Sprint
Car
Series to this Sunday's "Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic" USAC
"tripleheader" at the Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway. He holds a
34-point lead over defending series champion Tony Hunt, who gained slightly as a
result of Monday's race at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Jimmy
Wysong of South Jordan, Utah extended his lead in the 2005 Young Automotive
Group Rocky Mountain Sprint Car Series standings as a result of his 40-lap
victory in Monday's Salt Lake City race. Wysong led all 40 laps in his Spiers
Concrete Construction/Royal Purple Wysong/Chevy to beat Mike Murgoitio, Rick
Pardee, Jim Waters and Hunt in the race which awarded points toward both the
Valvoline USAC Western and Rocky Mountain championships.
Swanson
was eighth at Salt Lake City but has not fared as well as Hunt at Stockton this
year. Hunt finished second at Stockton in June and was the fastest qualifier two
weeks ago before a stuck throttle sent him over the wall during the feature.
Swanson's Stockton finishes this year have been fourth and 12th, while Brian
McClish and Tim Barber, both "top-five" ranking drivers, have won the
two Stockton outings.
Hunt
finished second in the only 100-lap Western Sprint race conducted last year, at
Madera, Calif.
Wysong
emerged from the Salt Lake City race with a 43-point lead over Waters in their
battle for the 2005 Young Automotive Group title, which will be finalized at RMR
September 17.
Sunday's Stockton events include a 100-lap feature for the USAC Western Midgets
and a 20-lap feature for the USAC California Pavement Ford Focus Midgets.
