MAY 30, 2005...Five drivers are knotted
in a battle for the USAC Valvoline Western Sprint Car point lead going into this
Saturday's race at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Ore. The race marks
USAC's Sprint car debut at the 3/8-mile paved oval. Only nine points separate
the five drivers with a total of 74 available at Roseburg.
Saturday's race is only the 10th USAC event ever conducted in the Beaver State
but not the first at Roseburg. USAC's Supermodifieds competed in 1985 and 1986,
NASCAR Nextel Cup star Mike Bliss taking the final race and Gordon Smith, Bernie
Voytek, Jan Sneva and Rick Veenstra also posting wins. Robby Flock won USAC's
last race in Oregon, a Midget race at Portland in 2001.
A
40-lap feature event is on tap Saturday and Brad Bumgarner of Chico, Calif. is
the series leader. Trailing closely are Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind., Kody
Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif., defending Western Sprint Car Champion Tony Hunt of
Fair Oaks, Calif. and Tim Barber of San Francisco, Calif., fresh from a
third-place finish in last Saturday night's PayLess/Remy International
"Little 500" at Anderson, Ind.
