(Oxnard, CA., 2/28/2005) Saturday night March 5, at 5:00pm marks the
opening night for the 2005 Ventura Raceway/VRA season, at its home track at the
Ventura County Fairgrounds/Seaside Park, located just off the 101 Freeway in
Ventura. With all the top drivers from past seasons coming back in 2005, the
outlook for outstanding racing action week after week is highly anticipated.
Saturday’s action will include four of VRA’s top classes: VRA 360 Sprint
Cars, VRA Modifieds, VRA Dwarf Cars, and VRA Dwarf Cars. Last year’s
champions, Tom Stansberry, in Sprint Cars, Mike Frazier, in Pony Stocks, Rick
Rodarte, in Modifieds and Mike Sweeney and Jeff Shelton in Dwarf Cars will be
there to try to get off to a great start in the new 2005 season.
VRA Sprint Cars will once again headline the night of racing with a full
program of heat races and a twenty car, 30 lap main event. Drivers scheduled to
compete include, Kevin Kierce, Bill Welch, Steve Conrad, Rob Kershaw, Chris
Wakim, Blake Miller, Chris Tramel, Joe Henderson and a host of other fine
drivers. These open wheeled, V 8 powered, cars are the fastest VRA Cars that
race at Ventura Raceway hitting speeds in excess of seventy miles per hour down
the short front and back stretches. Close hard fought racing is the rule not the
exception every night they race.
VRA Pony Stocks and Modifieds are also competing on Saturday night. These
classes are designed for entry-level racers who may wish to move up to IMCA
Modifieds or other classes in the future. These classes always put on great
racing each night they race. Pony Stocks are four cylinder coupes and sedans and
are nearly stock in appearance and set-up. VRA Modfieds are true racecars
patterned after the larger IMCA Modifieds that also race here at Ventura. V 6 or
four cylinder engines power them. Some of the top drivers in Pony Stocks are
David Peterson, Jon Everhart, Andrew Greiman, Jim Evans, Adam McPhail, Dave
Revard, and Joel Chavez, along with 2004 Champion Mike Frazier. Top VRA Modified
drivers include Dave Lidren, Ric Bronson, Marty McLAughlin, Tom Morley, Jody
Davis, Bruce Blackman Jr. and Jeff Goddard.
The final group racing on Saturday is the two classes of VRA Dwarf Cars. The
Pros and Seniors race these downsized 1200cc motorcycle powered sedans and
coupes that resemble cars of the thirty’s and forties. They are crowd
favorites as they zip around Ventura Raceway. Top drivers in these two classes
include Mike Sweeney, Ed Niedzwiecki, Jeff Shelton, Ryan Blade, Marc Lippert,
Jon Prechtl and Rick Denny.
Racing gets under way with warm-ups at 4:00pm with racing starting at 5:00pm.
Front gates open at 4:00pm with general admission seating throughout the
grandstands. Admission prices are: $14.00 for adults, $11.00 for seniors/juniors
