Marysville, CA - May 29, 2005...Two spectacular flips punctuated the
non-wing Hunt Magneto Speedway Sprint Car Select Series event at Twin Cities
Speedway Saturday night. The racing dentist, Dr. David Goodwill of Napa won the
feature event.
Veteran driver Rick Eversult of
Rio Linda was airlifted from the speedway after flipping his racer as he
attempted a pass on the front straightaway during the final heat race.
Eversult’s car came into contact with a car driven by Select Series point
leader Sam Fries just past the flag stand. Eversult’s car was launched into a
high-speed flight toward turn one. Eversult’s car turned onto it’s top,
wheels in the air, in mid-flight. It impacted the first turn banking, cage
first, with terrific force. The car flipped again, and then slowly rolled back
on its wheels. The car came to rest some thirty yards from the original point of
impact with Fries. Eversult was unconscious when crews reached the car and the
potential gravity of his injuries was assessed.
The LifeFlight helicopter
located at nearby Yuba County Airport was immediately dispatched and landed on
turn two near where the car had landed. Eversult who had been removed from his
car a short time before the helicopter’s arrival was immediately loaded into
the craft and was hurried away to Sacramento’s Sutter Hospital. Eversult
floated in and out of consciousness while he was being worked on at the
speedway. The race was red flagged for nearly an hour. Eversult was third in the
track point standings entering the event.
At this writing it is reported
that Eversult is resting comfortably. However, according to track manager Greg
Kearns, he received a career ending neck injury. Eversult’s most serious
injury is a broken bone in his neck. At this time Eversult appears to have a
long period of convalescence and recovery ahead of him. When we know something
we will update the data. Updates will be placed on the website as we receive
them.
It is important to note here
that the track’s head scorer is Eversult’s mother, Barbara Eversult. When
Rick was airlifted to the hospital, this brave and focused woman remained at the
track to continue on with her duties. It appeared that she understood that Rick
would be getting the best of care during the remainder of the event. An
emotional tip of the hat, from this observer, to this very special person.
Showing a constitution of steel, she soldiered on without missing a beat. Words
of encouragement can be emailed to Barbara at rickosheasmom@sbcglobal.net.
In the feature event Citrus
Heights driver Tim Sherman flipped hard in nearly the same place while
challenging for the lead at half distance. Sherman and the race leader,
Modesto’s Ed Amador, touched wheels as the pair diced for the lead, again,
just past the flag stand. Sherman’s car popped into the night sky and twirled
in mid air. Unlike Eversult’s impact, Sherman’s car dissipated energy as it
barrel-rolled to a stop. Sherman was trapped in his car. The torque tube had
broken and Sherman’s foot was wedged underneath. Sherman’s thumb was badly
broken when the steering wheel spun in his hand. Sherman was rescued and
transported to nearby Rideout Hospital. He was released today(Sunday).
Front row starter Jeremy Hawes
in the only Ford powered sprint car we know of was leading the initial round.
Hawes was also the first yellow flag as he sustained front end damage as he
battled for the early lead with Amador. Hawes returned, but was laps down in the
final order. Amador and Sherman then slugged it out up front until Sherman’s
spectacular exit from the race.
Amador spun and stopped during
the Sherman crash and third place runner Goodwill inherited a lead he would not
relinquish. Track point leader Steve Stein of Vacaville finished in second ahead
of Morgan Hill’s Rob Howard, a fast closing Charlie Marrs and Plymouth’s
Steve Nelson.
Yuba City’s Lisa Shelby
roared to victory in the TCS Mini Stock feature after a tumultuous race long
battle with a half-dozen other competitors. The race looked to be another Kevin
Sprague benefit as Sprague put nearly a half-lap between himself and the other
drivers. Then Sprague fell victim to tire woes that would haunt him the rest of
the evening. Sprague is the defending champion and point leader in the series.
With Sprague out of the mix a
monumental tussle ensued. It
included Shelby, Shane Stoker, Gary Holsey, Heather Bartlett, Ken Reische and
Mike and Shaun Merritt. Shelby kept everyone at bay in an extraordinary
performance. She scooped up the trophy and money associated with her drive to
the checkers. It was Shelby’s first ever feature win at the speedway. Stoker,
Holsey, Reische and Bartlett were the top five. Shelby has picked up the pace in
recent weeks and now has to be considered a serious challenger for the
championship. Sprague’s demise and Reische’s solid fourth place finish
should make the point race at the top more interesting than ever.
After an early race scrap with
pole sitter Kenny Robinson and a late race threat by point leader Phillip
Shelby, Marysville’s Andy Aust won yet another feature in the Riebes Racing
Series Stock Cars. Front row starter and early race contender Big Jake Cavasos
made a miscue in turn two early in the race. He did not threaten again.
Aust got Robinson with a slick
move off of turn four and motored on to victory. A swarm of competitors battled
for fourth through ninth in a crowd-pleasing joust. Behind Aust, Shelby and
Robinson came Ray Benkowski, Brad Magenheimer and Jeff Olshowka.
Aust continues to be the man to
watch. He seems to be obsessed with getting back to the top in the point
standings after his disqualification two races ago plummeted him to eighth.
All official finishes and
points will be posted by Wednesday at the close of business.
A short field of eight SORA
Sprint 100’s took the green for their abbreviated feature event. Kerry
McColloch took the checkers in the non-stop event. For additional SORA
