November 7, 2005...
Herrera not only won the main Event Saturday Saturday night, but snagged the
lead in the points chase for the Southwest Sprint Car Series over Rick Ziehl by
seven points. Rick Ziehl, from Las Cruces, New Mexico has lead almost all
season, but the chase has been close between Ziehl, Herrera, and Ronny Clark
driving the Morales sprinter from Tucson , Arizona. The points chase also
includes two new drivers Andrew Rienbold in 9th, and Robert Hall Jr. in 10th.
Joe Herrera has also taken the car owner points lead over the Joe Morales
sprinter, by 9 points. The season points chase will end on the December 31st at
USA Race Park in the Roger McCluskey Classic, a two day event. The Second day of
the McCluskey Classic will be the first points event for the 2006 season.
Marty Miller from Glendale, Arizona led the Main by a half lap, until a yellow
flag was dropped after a car spun in turn one on the 14th lap . By this time
Herrera had worked himself to second from the sixth starting spot, which put
Herrera on Millers back bumper on the restart. A controversy was born when the
race was restarted with a lapped car being put back into the rear of the field,
which should have been left between Miller and Herrera. It was latter determend
that the car was lapped on the 13th lap, and that the lapped car should have
been placed between Miller and Herrera on the restart.
Miller ended up finishing 4th, but was awarded a third place pay-off for the
scoring error, but was penalized an undisclosed amount for the official
harassment by a team car member.
Racing action was nonstop through the entire field with a Goodyear Hard charger
award being awarded to Cole Boyd from Tucson on his out standing charge in the
Main Event from the rear of the field. Ronny Clark out qualified the entire
field by more than a half second with a 16.558, which also qualified Clark for a
Goodyear right rear tire for the Roger McCluskey Classic coming up on December
31st and January 1st New Years Day!
Rookie driver Porter Smith driving the Dave Burns sprinter # 52 flipped during
qualifying, and took an ambulance ride to the hospital, but was back in time to
watch the feature!
