June 1, 2005...
Jeremy Sherman wins the rained delayed shootout with Johnny Herrera pressing
all the way! Sherman and Herrera diced back and forth through the traffic in
the 28 car field as the track took rubber. Rick Ziehl from Las Cruces, NM
and Jason Tanner from Albuquerque were closing in on the closing laps,
Tanner coming from the 8th row starting spot was on the
move displaying the Unser family desire to win, finishing 4th!
Charles Davis was having a good run at third, dicing with Herrera
and Ziehl until he blew a right rear late in the race, Davis finished
18th.
Hawaiian challenger Dean Freitas was the top Hawaiian with a 9th place
finish, he was Mr. Smooth with speed. The next Hawaiian in the finish was
Shaun Ternora at 15th who adapted well to USA Race Park's 3/8th
clay oval. Shaun was there to race, he worked hard to make
the show!
Brandon Ternora finished 20th after replacing a blown engine early
in the program, They rebuilt the engine in the pits in 90 degree weather.
Another hard charger from Hawaii, Albert Ternora had a taste of the wall
in Sundays heat races, and completely put a new chassis together in
time to make the Main, and finishing 23rd. Rocky Silva finished a close
24th and also had an engine let go early in the weekend, Rocky did
the engine rebuild in the pits.
Over all the Hawaiians faired well, although Hawaiian Rodney
Copello was involved with a horrific crash that put him into the wall and
out for the weekend. Tim West from Albuquerque, NM was also
involved and flipped through the billboards coming out of turn two on the
start of the C Main on Sunday.
Red flags were at a minimum in the A Main until James High from Albuquerque,
NM and Brandon Lane from Mesa, Az. hooked wheels spinning both cars directly
under the flag stand. Ron Kratz from Tucson, Az. and David Burns
from Santa Fe New Mexico were coming out of turn 4 on the high side, they
had nowhere to go. Burns went over Ron Kratz right rear and flipped hard
enough to earn a new Avenger chassis for himself, he was done for
the night.
Saturdays show was rained out and it took untill Monday Memorial Day to get a
Main Event in and it was well worth the wait. The Hawaiians and the Southwest
Sprint Car Series had their first mainland shootout with 40 Main
Event.
