May 2, 2005...May 28th and 29th USA Race Park in Tucson, Arizona will host
the first" Hawaiian Challenge Race". 10 Hawaiian sprint car teams
visiting from Hawaii to Arizona to challenge the regulars of the Southwest
Sprint Car Series. The Southwest Sprint Car Series has been to Hawaii twice
with eight to twelve sprint car teams challenging the Hawaiian's at
Hawaii Motor Speedway in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Rick Ziehl 2003 Southwest Series Champion is one of the
early entrants to this first time event. The first 14 Southwest Series
entrants qualify for the Saturday Event with the Hawaiian Challengers and
Sunday's Event will be open to all Southwest Members and nonmembers.
Saturday's Challenge race will pay $1500 to win and $225
to start the feature for the first day of racing action. Sundays Open Challenge
race will pay $2500 to win and $325 to start the Feature at the recently
revamped USA Race Park. USA Race Park is the home of the News Years Day
"Roger McCluskey Classic " sanctioned by the Southwest Sprint
Car Series.
Other heavy hitters challenging the Hawaiians at the city
of the Sun are Jason Tanner from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Friday night's Main
Event winner at the recent Southwest Sprint Car Spring Shootout at Las Cruces, NM. Tanner also
in keeping the winning tradition in the family having an Uncle named Al
Unser Jr., Grandfather named Al Unser Sr., and having cousin Robbie Unser on
the race team helping to set-up the car.
Lieghton Croutch from Lubbock, Texas will also make the long
haul to justify his horrific flip that he had in last years visit to the
Hawaiian Classic in Hawaii. Croutch had a very frightening flip that involved
a fence post nearly going through the drivers compartment of the car and
then wrapping the car up with fence material. The Southwest Sprint Car
Series has several rising stars that participate in the Series and
Lieghton Croutch is well on his way.
One of the Southwest Sprint Car Series original creators David
Burns will field two cars. One piloted by Albuquerque's James High, having several
SCOA Main Event wins under his belt and Burns taking on the
responsibility of his second car.
