 Press Release

SCRL Southwest Sprints and BRA Modified Tour race entry list is heating up for April 23rd at Las Cruces, NM and April 24th at El Paso, Texas!

April 10, 2005...Former Southwest Series champion Rick Ziehl, a huge favorite when he gets behind the wheel of a race car in his Las Cruces home town, tops the growing list of entries for the Southwest Sprint Car Series races April 23 and 24 in Las Cruces, NM and April 24 in El Paso.

Ziehl, the 2003 Southwest Series Champion, won the first Southwest Sprint Car race ever in April, 2002 at Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces. He finished ninth in the Roger McCluskey Classic in Tucson on New Year's Day 2005.

Challengers who will make the tow include Southwest Sprints 2003 Rookie of the Year Brandon Lane from Mesa, Arizona and 2004 NMMRA Sprint Car champion Jon Taylor of Albuquerque. Ron Clark of Tucson, who won the 2003 Friday night Main Event in the Hawaii Challenge race in Hawaii, and the Texas Hard Charger Leighton Croutch from Lubbock, are confirmed in the early lineup.

The Las Cruces and El Paso events are part of the SouthWest Sprint Car Series "Racin to Hawaii," a season-long chase for a chance to go to Hawaii for the Hawaiian Classic on Thanksgiving weekend 2005. This will be the third year in a row the Southwest Sprint Car Series will take its top eight in points to Hawaii Motor Speedway's quartermile dirt track. An invitation to the Hawaii Classic also may be given to the NMMRA Champion for 2005, and the 360 Sprint Champion for 2005 at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.

Josh Pelkey of Phoenix won the first 2005 event, which drew a field of 32 cars on New Year's Day in Tucson.

Joining the Sprint Cars on Saturday and Sunday at both tracks will be the roaring modifieds of the Barnett Harley-Davidson 2005 Modified Touring Series. A trio of second- and third-generation Modified stars will be in the BRA Modifieds' races.

Bumper Jones is the son of New Mexico stock car veteran Royal Jones. R.C. Whitwell of Tucson is the son of Super Modified and Sprint Car driver Ronnie Whitwell of Tucson and the grandson of former Arizona Super Modified and Midget champion R.C. Whitwell. Former Tucson stock car champion Paul Banghart is son of veteran driver George Banghart.

At Las Cruces on Saturday, gates will open at 3:00 PM and qualifying events will begin at 7:00 PM. Sunday in El Paso, gates will open at 12:00 Noon and qualifying will start at 2:00PM.

The BRA modifieds will open their season Friday night, April 23, at the El Paso track.
