April 10, 2005...Former Southwest Series champion Rick Ziehl, a huge
favorite when he gets behind the wheel of a race car in his Las Cruces home
town, tops the growing list of entries for the Southwest Sprint Car Series races
April 23 and 24 in Las Cruces, NM and April 24 in El Paso.
Ziehl, the 2003 Southwest Series Champion, won the first Southwest Sprint Car
race ever in April, 2002 at Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces. He
finished ninth in the Roger McCluskey Classic in Tucson on New Year's Day 2005.
Challengers who will make the tow include Southwest Sprints 2003 Rookie of
the Year Brandon Lane from Mesa, Arizona and 2004 NMMRA Sprint Car champion Jon
Taylor of Albuquerque. Ron Clark of Tucson, who won the 2003 Friday night Main
Event in the Hawaii Challenge race in Hawaii, and the Texas Hard Charger
Leighton Croutch from Lubbock, are confirmed in the early lineup.
The Las Cruces and El Paso events are part of the SouthWest Sprint Car Series
"Racin to Hawaii," a season-long chase for a chance to go to Hawaii
for the Hawaiian Classic on Thanksgiving weekend 2005. This will be the third
year in a row the Southwest Sprint Car Series will take its top eight in points
to Hawaii Motor Speedway's quartermile dirt track. An invitation to the Hawaii
Classic also may be given to the NMMRA Champion for 2005, and the 360 Sprint
Champion for 2005 at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.
Josh Pelkey of Phoenix won the first 2005 event, which drew a field of 32
cars on New Year's Day in Tucson.
Joining the Sprint Cars on Saturday and Sunday at both tracks will be the
roaring modifieds of the Barnett Harley-Davidson 2005 Modified Touring Series. A
trio of second- and third-generation Modified stars will be in the BRA Modifieds'
races.
Bumper Jones is the son of New Mexico stock car veteran Royal Jones. R.C.
Whitwell of Tucson is the son of Super Modified and Sprint Car driver Ronnie
Whitwell of Tucson and the grandson of former Arizona Super Modified and Midget
champion R.C. Whitwell. Former Tucson stock car champion Paul Banghart is son of
veteran driver George Banghart.
At Las Cruces on Saturday, gates will open at 3:00 PM and qualifying events
will begin at 7:00 PM. Sunday in El Paso, gates will open at 12:00 Noon and
qualifying will start at 2:00PM.
The BRA modifieds will open their season Friday night, April 23, at the El
Paso track.
