Santa Maria, CA - 9/10/05...Wild 106
FM/Bandit Sprint Cars wrapped up their championship season
Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway with Greg Porte, of
San Luis Obispo, finishing third in the 30 lap main event to
win both the Wild 106 and Bandit Series championships. Peter
Murphy and Davey Pombo battled it out in front of Porte for
the race win. Bobby Elliott secured the early lead before
being passed by Murphy on lap 3. It looked like Murphy was
on the way to his third feature win of the season at Santa
Maria but Pombo had other ideas. On the 12th circuit Pombo
got by for the lead and drove through lapped traffic
masterfully for his third local victory. Elliott held on for
fourth and Evan Suggs, of Scotts Valley, was fifth. Rusty
Carlile set fast time of 14.362 seconds and Pombo, Elliott
and Hanford's Chad Boespflug won 8 lap heat races.
Century 21 Hometown Realty Late Model Stocks also ran a 30
lap main event. Point leader Mike Johnson, of Clovis, took
no chances with his slim advantage over Jerry Stewart and
led the event from green to checkered. Stewart ran second
for a time before dropping to a 12th place finish with an
ailing engine. Third in points Billy Griffin helped his
cause by working his way up from a 14th place start to
finish third behind Johnson and Devin Crockett of Arroyo
Grande. Griffin's run placed him in a tie for second with
Stewart, 24 points behind the leader, with three races to
go. Atascadero's Donnie Hampl and Arroyo Grande's Brian
Stote were fourth and fifth and Hampl, Crockett and Lompoc's
Chet Buckley won the 8 lap heats. Fast time, 15.403 seconds,
was set by Rick Coffey of Santa Maria.
Factory Stocks were invited out for a non-points race to add
some cars to help pack the track. Ten drivers took advantage
of the test session in preparation for their final points
run October 1. Gary Rayburn, Sr. won the 10 lap heat race
and then did battle with eventual winner Michael Frazier, of
Santa Maria, settling for second place in the 15 lap
feature. Third through fifth were Kevin Linson, Tim Correia
and Brent Barfoot. The main event had one of the strangest
finishes in Speedway history when Frazier was collected by
the lapped car of Charlie Scovell exiting turn four on the
final lap. The two cars nosed into the front chute wall some
fifty feet short of the finish line but, fortunately for
Frazier, their momentum allowed them to slide across the
finish line giving Frazier the win.
Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty Late Model
Stocks are back on the schedule for the 27th Annual Wild 106
FM Bill Baker Memorial. KKFX Fox 11 Street Stocks and
Automart Wholesale Mini Stocks will also be racing. Gates
open at four, with qualifying at six and racing at seven.
