Santa Maria, CA - 8/07/05...Forty-one sprint cars showed up at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night for round 2 of the Bandit/VRA Sprint Car Grand Slam, a five race series at four different tracks. The 20th Annual Bill Baker Memorial also featured Ford Focus Midgets and Automart Wholesale Mini Stocks in front of a near capacity crowd. On the opening lap of the 30 lap Sprint Car feature event several cars became entangled in the north turns sending Wes Richardson to the pits for the duration. On the restart Evan Suggs, of Scotts Valley, grabbed the lead but was only able to hold it until the fourth circuit before Sidney, Australia's Peter Murphy went to the point. On lap nine Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan put a move on Murphy to take over the lead but Murphy returned the favor four laps later. From that point on it was Murphy first, Sheridan second. On the final circuit Joe Henderson spun exiting turn two. That set up a one lap sprint to the finish with Murphy holding on for the win, Sheridan second, Suggs third, Clark Templeton III fourth and Blake Miller fifth. Chad Boespflug and Jimmy Reeves won the two 10 lap "B" main events and 10 lap heat race victories fell to Shawn Kautz, Rusty Carlile, Greg Porte and Murphy. Davey Pombo set fast time at 13.817 seconds. Fresno's Audra Sasselli took the lead on lap one of the 20 lap Ford Focus Midget main event. That lead was short lived when point leader Chase Barber, of Morgen Hill, went to the front on lap two and held that position until the checkers waved. Chris Veach came home second with Alex Harris third. Fourth and fifth were taken by Robby Whitchurch and Keith Janca. Veach and Whitchurch won 8 lap heat races. Chris Fletcher held the lead for the first half of the Mini Stock 20 lap feature event before runaway point leader Darrin Davis went by and pulled away to his sixth main event victory of 2005. Lompoc's Mike Weigel, second in points, was runner up in the event as he tries to hold onto the point leader. Justin Crockett was a strong third, followed by Rob Gilbertson and Debby Ferrara. Fletcher and Crockett came out on top in the 8 lap heat races. Next Saturday night will be Budweiser Night at SMS with Century 21 Hometown Realty Late Model Stocks, KKFX Fox 11 Street Stocks, Crossroads Community Church Factory Stocks and a beer keg relay for the drivers. Gates open at four, with qualifying at six and racing at seven. RACE
