(APRIL 18, 2005 - Santa Maria, CA) ...Wild 106/Bandit sprint cars, Automart Wholesale mini stocks and Crossroads Community Church factory stocks opened the 2005 racing season on Santa Maria Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval Saturday night. Jimmy Reeves, of Laton, outran Aaron Chaney and Greg Porte to take the early local point lead at SMS. Davey Pombo, who set fast time, and Jason Montgomery placed fourth and fifth in the 30-lap run. Eight lap heat races went to John Burnett, Jowy Layman and Rusty Carlile. Lompoc's Mike Weigel drove his mini stock to a convincing win in their 20-lap main event. Darrin Davis, Ben Caswell, Chris Fleicier and Rob Gilbertson followed him home. Jessica Rust, Caswell and Davis scored 8-lap heat wins. Teammates Gary Rayburn, Jr. and Dale Sylvester, of Grover Beach, battled each other for victory in the 20-lap factory stock feature event. Althouth Sylvester was able to lead much of the event, Rayburn eventually wore him down and passes for the lead. Third place was Dan Oliveira with Tom Breshears fourth and Graham Dowly fifth. Rayburn and Doyle captured 8-lap heat race victories. "Best Looking Car" awards for the 2005 season were taken home by: Greg Porte, sprint car; Justin Crockett, mini stock; and Graham Doyle, factory stock. Next Saturday night the Budweiser Golden State Challenge winged 410 sprint cars take to the track joined by KCOY/KKFX street stocks and NMRA TQ midgets.
