(8/27/2005 Santa Maria, CA) The Awesome Aussie, Peter Murphy gave the
crowd at Santa Maria Speedway things to cheer about tonight as he
challenged the big guns of USAC/CRA. Murphy who was piloting the Tarlton
& Sons Sharp Insurance/Elite Landscaping #21 Maxim had a 360 powerplant
under the hood against the open 410 non wing sprinters. The Aussie would
time in at a 15.462 good enough for 21st out of 24 cars.
Starting on the point in the third heat Murphy would battle with Rip Williams
for the lead, and in the closing laps hold onto to the top spot and a transfer
to the "A" main. Starting 19th in the 30 lap feature, Murphy
would utilize any line he could find to pass and go forward. As the
checkers dropped, the Awesome Aussie would find himself finishing 10th amongst
the bigger 410's.
"Whew that was some work out there." said Murphy. "We took a
gamble tonight. I have raced here 4 times here this year before tonight
and all 4 nights the track got slick. So we decided to go with our 360
tonight and use the less horsepower to our advantage. It figures the
track would be heavy. We gave em a good run though and we feel real good
about our finish. Next weekend barring any unforeseen problems we should
win the VRA/Bandit Sprints Grand Slam. No worries!"
