(8/21/2005 Bakersfield, CA) Round number 3 of the VRA/Bandit
Sprints kicked off last night at Bakersfield Speedway and drew an astounding
48 non wing sprinters. The Awesome Aussie, Peter Murphy began the night
off with what looked to be some bad luck by drawing the #2 pill for
qualifying. That was not the case however as Murphy piloted the Tarlton
& Sons Sharp Insurance/Elite Landscaping #21 Maxim to a 13.017 which would
hold until the last qualifier of the evening would turn a 13.008 relegating
Murphy to 2nd quick.
Upon the inversion Murphy would start 6th in the 2nd heat and use the top of
the track to finish 2nd and be the man to draw the pill for the feature.
As fate would have it Murphy would draw the #10 pill and would start the
"A" feature in 10th. At the drop of the green all the
frontrunners chose to stay on the bottom while the Awesome Aussie chose the
top and set sail. On lap 11 Murphy would take the lead and never look
back. The victory was the 2nd in a row for Murphy in the Grand Slam and
paid $2,000 plus extended the points lead.
"We were fast just pulling into the pits tonight." grinned Murphy.
"I knew we would certainly be better than the last time we were here and
what do you know I was right. This car was on a rail and with everyone
running the bottom we took the top and made it work. This Grand Slam is
attracting some stiff cars each week but so far we have been able to be the
one's to beat. Our momentum as a team is really strong right now and
hopefully we can keep it rolling, no worries."
