(OCTOBER
18, 2005, PERRIS, CA)
Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply will present the Valvoline USAC/CRA
Sprint Cars this Saturday night in the final tune up at Perris Auto Speedway for
the 10th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals.
Concord, California's Damion Gardner heads into Saturday's race with a 90-point
lead in the standings over defending series champion Rip Williams of Yorba
Linda, California. Ventura, California's Cory Kruseman sits third in the
standings and trails Gardner by 94 points. If Gardner prevails, he will win his
first ever-traditional sprint car championship. Gardner won the last main event
staged at The PAS on October 1st.
The troop returns to action after a rare Saturday off last week. It was only the
fourth weekend without a race since April 30th. The last USAC/CRA race took
place two weeks ago when the series made its first ever appearance at USA
Raceway Park in Tucson, Arizona. Kruseman out qualified Gardner on the 3/8 of a
mile Arizona clay oval and beat him in the main event for his eighth win of the
2005 campaign. Gardner tops the victory list with 13 wins in 2005 and 21 total
wins in the two-year old series.
Williams, whose 101 lifetime wins is only two shy of the CRA/SCRA/USAC west
coast record held the legendary Dean Thompson, hopes to regroup after a
disappointing night in Tucson. Plagued by engine problems on the night, the John
& Sharon Jory owned team did not make the main and decided to not use a
provisional in case the engines woes continued.
Saturday's display of back em' dirt track racing will include the 3 lap Snap-on
Tools Trophy Dash, four ten lap heat races, a 12 lap B main and a 30 lap A main
(in addition there may be a C main event).
Before the racing heats up on Saturday night, the 3rd Annual Legends of Ascot
will take place on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds. This years honorees are 1963
& 1968 CRA Champion Bob Hogle, Midget superstar Danny McKnight, 1964 CRA
Champion Hal Minyard, multi-time CRA car owner champion & all time main
event leading car owner (155 wins) Alex Morales and racing innovator Ted
Halibrand. For more information on the Legends of Ascot, call Don Weaver at
(310) 549-3562.
Don't forget, on Friday night, The Diamond Valley Automotive Group Honda - Mazda
- Volkswagen Strip at The PAS street legal drag strip will be in action as well.
The cost to race on the drag strip is only $20.00 per competitor. Gates open at
5:00 PM.
Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the freeway close Lake Perris
Fairgrounds, home of the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east
of Los Angeles. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east
two and a half miles to the fairgrounds.
