(SEPTEMBER
22, 2005, PERRIS, CA)
Like tree leaves starting to turn brown in autumn, another late September
tradition has begun at Perris Auto Speedway.
The arrival of entries for the November 3rd, 4th
and 5th 10th annual Budweiser Oval Nationals presented by
Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply.
The
entries that came into the Oval Entertainment office the past ten days have been
spiked by a number of open wheel racings best drivers. The entry for 1997 Oval
Nationals Champion Rip Williams crossed promoter Don Kazarian’s desk last
Saturday. The west coast superstar
won the inaugural USAC/CRA championship in 2004 and holds a 55-point lead in
this year’s series heading into this Saturday’s race at the big Manzanita
Speedway half-mile in Phoenix, Arizona. Williams
won his 101st sprint car main event last Saturday night at The PAS.
Wednesday
morning’s mail contained an envelope from Tony Stewart Racing with the entries
for Indiana based drivers Jay Drake and Josh Wise.
Drake, the 2004 USAC National Sprint Car champion, currently sits second
in the National Series. The Val
Verde, California native is no stranger to the victory podium at The PAS having
scored a win on the Riverside County clay oval back in the days of SCRA.
Wise,
who was born in Janesville, Wisconsin but grew up in nearby Riverside,
California, has cut a lot of laps on The PAS half-mile and many of them have
been successful. Like his teammate
Drake, Wise won an SCRA main event at the track and two years ago won the 360
Nationals at The PAS. Heading into
this weekend’s “4-Crown Nationals” at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway,
the former Belleville Midget National Champion is having a phenomenal season
leading the USAC National Midget point standings, sitting second in the Silver
Crown Series and fourth in USAC National Sprint Car points.
While
Drake and Wise lurk near the top of the USAC National Sprint Car standings, the
driver they are chasing for the prestigious title submitted his entry late last
week. Levi Jones of Olney, Illinois
will bring his flashy 2B Racing machine west in hopes of capturing his first
ever Oval Nationals. Last year he
finished third behind Cory Kruseman and Josh Ford.
The 23-year old former high school basketball all-star has the 2004
Indiana Sprint Week Championship proudly displayed on his racing resume.
By the way, Jones is no stranger to The PAS as he used to drive Glen
Crossno’s familiar #38, which is now steered by Kruseman.
The
greatest driver in Northern California Sprint Car racing history, Campbell,
California’s Brent Kaeding, entered Oval Nationals this week as well.
With an amazing 25 Northern California Sprint Car Championships on his
side of the ledger, Kaeding is a threat every time he straps himself into a
racecar. His best finish in the
Oval Nationals came in 2001 when he placed third behind his son Bud and Tony
Jones. The wily veteran’s biggest
win in Southern California came in 1985 when he won the USAC Midget Turkey Night
Grand Prix at J.C. Agajanian’s legendary Ascot Park in Gardena.
Joining
this group of superstars among the early entries for the 10th Annual
Budweiser Oval Nationals is 1998 Oval National champion Rodney Argo of Gardena,
California, young star Mike Spencer of Temecula, California, Mooresville, North
Carolina’s Troy Cline, Mat Neely of Brownsburg, Indiana, local drivers David
Cardey & Adam Mitchell, Arizona’s Chuck Buckman, Northern California’s
Kevin Urton, rookie Josh Williams and teenagers Alan Ballard and Matt Stewart.
Mark Priestley has entered his famous yellow #7 car with the driver to be
announced at a later date.
