(JUNE
28, 2005, PERRIS, CA) Don
Kazarian’s Perris Auto Speedway will be the place to be for hardcore race fans
this Saturday night as Budweiser and Snap-on Tools present the Temecula Valley
Pipe & Supply Firecracker 50 for the Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Cars.
If the 50-lap main event on the famous half-mile clay oval is not enough,
the promoter is promising the biggest and best fireworks show on the track’s
10 Independence Day celebration. Anyone
who has seen a PAS fireworks show in the past, has to salivate at Kazarian’s
comment.
The
fireworks actually got an early start last Saturday when veteran starter Eddie
Ramirez threw the green flag at the outset of the 30-lap main event.
Contact between Canyon Lake, California’s Danny Ebberts and Corona,
California’s Steve Ostling triggered a Talladega style 11-car crash that
blocked the entire front straight. While
the track crew was clearing up the mess, Ostling, who was knocked out of the
race along with three other drivers, attempted to vent his anger at Ebberts
“Marquess of Queensberry” style. Fortunately,
their corner workers stepped in and put a quick end to the disturbance.
The
controversy did not end with the race-starting tangle.
HARDLY! On lap 19,
championship contenders Cory Kruseman, of Ventura, California and Damion
Gardner, of Concord, California, were battling hard for the lead.
Gardner, who goes by the nickname of “The Demon,” threw a bid slide
job on Kruseman in turn three. Kruseman
held tough and contact was made. The
result saw Gardner continue on and into the lead while a very frustrated
Kruseman was left out of the race with a broken racecar.
The
next lap by under the caution flag, Kruseman let Gardner know he was not pleased
with what had transpired and the hullabaloo from the huge crowd drowned out the
noise of the cars as they circled the track.
Kruseman supporters angrily shook their fists and vociferously booed
Gardner as he drove by. Gardner
fans did likewise to Kruseman as he returned to the pits!
It was the kind of stuff that for decades has made Saturday night dirt
track racing the place to be for race fans.
Eleven
laps later Gardner took the checkered flag over Corona, California’s Tony
Jones and hard charging Mike Kirby of Torrance, California.
Jones wanted to make a challenge at the end, but dropped a cylinder.
Kirby had to restart at the back after the crew rebuilt his front end due
to damage suffered in “The Big One” at the start of the main.
When
Gardner parked his car on the front straight and shot through the top of the
cage to celebrate his series leading seventh win of they year, the noise from
the spectator side of the fence was deafening!
More boos from the Kruseman contingent and raucous cheers from “The
Demon’s” fans. Over the din
from the grandstands in victory circle, Gardner talked with Chris Holt on the
microphone and told the fans, “it was going to be a slider.
Slider until one of us gave up and I wanted to win as much as he did.”
Why
all of the rehashing of last week’s race now?
They get to do it all over again this Saturday in front of a packed
house! And, the main event will be
20-laps longer! This Saturday will
be like the old days in Boxing when fighters slugged it out over 15 rounds to
decide the championship instead of the modern day 12 rounders.
Twenty-extra laps could mean more potential slides jobs, more controversy
and more fireworks in the best racing series on the west coast.
Speaking
of fireworks, the “TRADITION” began when The PAS staged it’s first ever
Independence Day race in 1996. The
“TRADITION” is the BEST fireworks show in Riverside County, but this one is
slated to be even better. Promoter
Don Kazarian stated last week, “Tell the fans if they think our fireworks
shows have been good before, they haven’t seen anything yet.
This one is going to bigger and better than any we have put on in the
past.”
To
accommodate Saturday’s large crowd, spectator gates will open an hour early at
4:00 PM. At 4:30 PM there will be
the traditional contests and games for the kids and the Valvoline USAC/CRA
drivers behind the turn one grandstands.
For
those who like to camp out, the fair management is allowing camping on the
fairgrounds this weekend.
Saturday’s
giant holiday celebration of racing will consist of qualifying, the Snap-on
Tools Trophy Dash for the four fast qualifiers, four 10-lap heat races a B main
and a 30-lap A main event. The
giant fireworks spectacular will commence soon after the checkered flag puts out
the on track fireworks in the 50-lap main event.
Perris
Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the freeway close Lake Perris
Fairgrounds, home of the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east
of Los Angeles. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east
two and a half miles to the fairgrounds.
