(MAY
24, 2005, PERRIS, CA) When Temecula
Valley Pipe & Supply presents the popular Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Cars at
Perris Auto Speedway in the Annual Salute to Indy this Saturday night, the
nations hottest sprint car drive, Concord, California’s Damion Gardner, will
be shooting for an unprecedented fifth win in a row.
Gardner
began his incredible streak with a win at The PAS on April 30th when
the second year series started a stretch of 10 straight weeks of racing.
With the drop of the Eddie Ramirez green flag for the start of the main
that night, Gardner has thoroughly dominated the action on three distinctly
different racetracks. The half-mile
at The PAS, the tiny Ventura Raceway beachside oval and the big, super fast
Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona. Gardner
has taken on all comers, won the main event at each of the tracks and has been
fast-qualifier three out of the four times.
His impressive streak has captured the imagination of sprint car fans
nationwide and left fellow competitors muttering and shaking their heads.
When
the streak began, Gardner was fourth in the point standings some 78 markers
behind leader Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, California.
Ironically, the driver known as “The Demon,” now has a demonic 666
points. That is only 20 points shy
of Williams’ series best of 686.
This
Saturday night, Gardner and his Bruce Bromme Jr. led crew will face a new
challenge. Rather than the normal
30-lap feature distance, Saturday’s main will go 50-rounds.
The extra 20 laps requires a different strategy for all the drivers and
teams as they have to take care of their right rear tire and not run out of
fuel.
While
Gardner is the pick of many to take Saturday’s half-century grind, Williams,
Ventura’s Cory Kruseman, Buckeye, Arizona’s Charles Davis Jr., Torrance,
California’s Mike Kirby & “Super Rickie” Gaunt and Tony Jones of Norco
are among the drivers who would like to add a Salute to Indy wreath and
Gardner’s victory laden scalp to their trophy collection.
Saturday’s
show will consist of qualifying, the Snap-on Tools Trophy Dash for the four fast
qualifiers, four 10-lap heat races a B main and the 50-lap Salute to Indy A main
event.
