(APRIL
12, 2005, PERRIS, CA)
Popular veteran Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, California will
again try for career win #100 when Temecula Valley Pip & Supply
presents the thrilling USAC/CRA Valvoline Sprint Car Series at
Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night.
The
likeable Williams 99th victory came at The PAS last
October 29th in one of the preliminary nights for the
2004 Oval Nationals.
Less than a month later he sewed up his first ever career
championship at The PAS.
Going into Saturday’s race, the 2004 USAC/CRA “King” is
the point leader for the first time this year.
Williams took the top spot from Buckeye, Arizona’s Charles
Davis Jr. with a third place finish at the last race at The PAS on
March 26th.
Heading into this week’s event, he leads Davis by a mere
four points.
Williams’
best finish this season has been a pair of seconds.
The first one came at the season opener at The PAS on
February 5th when Concord, California Damion Gardner beat
him to the Eddie Ramirez checkered flag.
The other second place showing came on March 19th
when he chased Torrance, California’s “Super Rickie Gaunt across
the line at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona.
Even though he does not have a win thus far in 2005, Williams
has been the master of consistency finishing in the top five a total
of five times in the first seven races.
While
the 48 year-old has had numerous thrills in his long racing career,
one of the biggest occurred at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway two
weeks ago when Williams oldest son, Cody, made his racing debut with
the NMRA TQ Midgets.
The high school football player finished 7th in a
15 car field in the main event.
Williams
may well face his stiffest challenge from Ventura, California’s
Cory Kruseman when the series rolls into the PAS for round eight on
Saturday.
The two-time Chili Bowl Midget Champion has been on a tear
winning main events for car owner Glen Crossno the past three weeks.
The first of the three triumphs came at The PAS three weeks
ago in USAC/CRA competition.
The last two weeks Kruseman has beat VRA’s finest right in
his own backyard at the Ventura Raceway.
Kruseman and Gardner, who have both won two main events in
USAC/CRA competition this year, are the only drivers to post more
than one win in the series this year.
Gaunt & fellow Torrance resident Mike Kirby each has a
single victory, as does Lincoln’s Indiana’s Dave Darland.
Fresh
off a busy weekend last week where he finished 13th in the NASCAR
Truck Series race in Martinsville, Virginia on Saturday and 18th
in the USAC National Sprint Car Series season opener at Anderson,
Indiana last Sunday, New Castle, Indiana’s Tracy Hines will be on
hand on Saturday.
Joining the field in new rides will be Steve Ostling of
Corona, California in the Nadine Keller owned #5 and 1994 Turkey
Night Grand Prix winner Jordan Hermansader of Long Beach, California
in the Moose Racing #92.
Another
name familiar to longtime California sprint car fans will return to
action this Saturday night.
Jack Hawley will be getting behind the wheel of a sprint car
for the first time in over a decade.
A second generation driver, Hawley’s father, Don, won four
lifetime CRA main events including three at J.C. Agajanian’s Ascot
Park over 30 years ago.
Don Hawley’s wins came while driving for legendary owners
Bruce Bromme Sr., Bill & Evelyn Pratt and Glen Rea.
While Jack was sometimes referred to as “Don’s Son”
when he raced previously, many will be referring to him as “Jack
Jr’s Dad” this time around.
Hawley’s son, Jack Jr., is a former NCAA star quarterback
with the San Diego State Aztecs and went to training camp with the
San Francisco 49ers in 2004.
The quarterback will be in attendance to watch his dad in
action this Saturday.
Saturday’s
action packed program will consist of qualifying, the 3-lap Snap-on
Tools trophy dash, four ten lap heats races, a 12-lap B Main and a
knock down drag em’ out 30-lap A main event.
The spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM.
