(FEBRUARY 27,
2005, PERRIS, CA) The “Thunder & Lightning” of the Valvoline
USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will be under the Perris Auto Speedway lights for the first
time this season in a show presented by Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply this
Saturday night.
The PAS kicked off its 2005 sprint car campaign a month ago with a fierce,
knockdown - drag em’ out daytime show that was dominated by Concord’s Damion
Gardner. The Northern California veteran was fast qualifier, won the inaugural
Snap-on Tools Trophy Dash and out dueled defending series champion Rip Williams
(Yorba Linda) in a wild 30-lap main event. This Saturday, Gardner will attempt
to become the first driver in series history to reach the ten main event win
plateau while crowd favorite Williams will be seeking his 100th career victory.
Due to the rainout on February 19th, the series has been off for a month. That
was good news for several racecars and drivers who were bent and bruised at The
PAS season opener. Rickie Gaunt of Torrance, Temecula’s Mike Spencer, Santa
Maria’s Danny Sheridan, Tony Jones of Corona and Indiana’s Tracy Hines were
all involved in grinding crashes in the rough and tumble track opener. All are
expected back this Saturday night (Hines had a ride in the NASCAR Busch Series
race at Fontana last Saturday and as this went to press it was not known if he
had a ride in this weekends Busch event in Mexico City).
Three popular drivers who missed The PAS opener will be back in action this
week. Costa Mesa’s Bobby Cody, longtime veteran Gary W. Howard of Fontana and
Visalia’s Greg Bragg will all be making their 2005 season debuts on Saturday.
The two drivers tied for the series point lead, Mike Kirby of Torrance and
Buckeye, Arizona’s Charles Davis Jr, will be on hand along with San
Clemente’s Seth Wilson (started 22nd and finished 5th at The PAS season
opener), Ojai’s Troy Rutherford, Ventura’s Cory Kruseman, Rick Williams of
Castro Valley, Jason York of Chico, Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Yorba
Linda’s Cary Faas and a host of others.
Saturday’s action packed program will consist of qualifying, the Snap-on Tools
3-lap Trophy Dash, four 10 lap heats races, C main, a 12 lap B main and a 30 lap
A main event.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM.
March is “Relay for Life” month at The PAS. The Riverside County Clay Oval
has joined with the American Cancer Society to help fight the dreaded disease.
The PAS hopes to raise more than $10,000.00 for the cause during the month.
Perris Auto Speedway is conveniently located on the freeway close Lake Perris
Fairgrounds, home of the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east
of Los Angeles. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east
two and a half miles to the fairgrounds.
