Tracy, CA....It’s
official! Pat Ariaz has taken the NCMA Asphalt Championship for the third
consecutive season. NCMA ran its
final race of the year at Altamont Raceway this evening with twelve 360 sprints
ready to lay the rubber down on the “Fastest half Mile in the West”.
Manteca
’s Ariaz was quick time, but Scott Holloway from Oakley made quick work of the
Trophy Dash. Ariaz won the
first heat of the evening, and John Silva who hails from
Tracy
won the second heat. The line up
was set, Rob Hammond from Morgan Hill sat on the pole and Jimmy Lavelle rode
shotgun. Patterson’s Steve Amador
started third, Burt Siverling from
Concord
started fourth, and
Modesto
’s Ed Amador started fifth.
Hammond
opted to start in the rear as he was having a mechanical problem.
As the pack was getting ready to make the first lap, Silva’s power
steering let go and he smoked off the track.
Ed Amador jumped right out there and had the lead for more than half of
the main event. Son, Steve was
right there with dad for many of those laps. Burrows was all over
S. Amador
and finally got the number two spot. Meanwhile
in the very back of the pack Ariaz who had started last, was slowly and
methodically moving around every racer in front of him.
Inside, outside this was the smoothest run Ariaz has made this season and
the pack knew he was coming. He and
Ed Amador had one of the best races of the 2005 season and Ariaz finally took
the lead with eight laps to go. E.
Amador stood his track for second. Burrows
took third. Holloway in only his
second asphalt race of the year was fourth, and
Manteca
’s Michael Zarevich who continues to impress with his driving skill rounded
out the top five. Of note:
Don Hicks who won the previous race at Altamont, had a rotten finish to
his season as his steering went out during
hot laps and the sprinter was thrashed and
back on the trailer before the evening began.
