- Lakeport, CA...No winner and no losers this evening after
NCMA Sprints made the trek to Lakeport Speedway on the upper end of Clear Lake,
CA. The main event was rained out
but there was a little racing action before Mother Nature took over.
Scott Holloway from Oakley made his first appearance with
NCMA this season and broke his previous track record at this quarter mile
asphalt track. Pat Ariaz was right
behind him and rookie Jeff Burrows, getting more comfortable with every go
round, had third fast time tonight.
The Trophy Dash was held with Steve Amador of Patterson,
and Burrows from Manteca holding down the front and Ariaz also of Manteca and
Holloway bringing up the rear. Four
well matched machines all heading for the win.
Ariaz started to make his move and had a mechanical failure (with his
brakes) and ended up giving Burrows help right into the front straight wall,
leaving Burrows’ sprinter pigeon-toed and helpless.
He made his exit on the hook. The
Dash resumed and Holloway took the win.
Two heats were run, ten laps each with Sophomore NCMA
pilot, Rob Hammond, winning the first one and 2004 Asphalt Champion Ariaz taking
the second. As the gentlemen of the
Sprinters will do, all of them worked on Burrows’ racer to have him ready for
the main. Putting an axel in place
of the totally wrecked one and getting it back together.
Special thank you to Lee Cook who resides in Lakeport and
always comes out for NCMA sprints when they come to this terrific track.
He jumped right in and proved he could twist a wrench with the best of
them!
When it was time for the main event and NCMA was called up,
sprinkles had already begun. Track
Offices made the decision to try drying the track out and made a valiant effort
at that, but Ms. Nature would not cooperate and when it became apparent it was
not going to let up, the safety call was made.
NCMA makes one appearance at Lakeport each season and one
of the reasons is the graciousness of this track and its promoters, Bob and
Nadine Straus who go out of their way to make this long tow to their track worth
every mile. This may be one of the
reasons they were voted Small Track Promoters of the year for the entire United
States for 2004.
NCMA will be racing next Saturday Night on the “Fastest
Half Mile in the West”, Altamont Raceway & Arena, Tracy, CA. Come join us!
