SHERMAN SURVIVES EARLY CRASH TO WIN HIS TENTH MAIN EVENT
by Windy McDonald

Phoenix, AZ (August 6) Jeremy Sherman cops his tenth main event of the year while Chad Boat and Chris Olexiewicz add their names to the winner's list in Saturday night features at Manzanita Speedway.

A lap two crash that ended Mike Martin's night and sent points leader Jeremy Sherman to the work station was not enough to change the outcome but it did add interest to Saturday night's Arizona Sprint Car Association feature race.

Martin and Sherman were battling for the fourth position when contact occurred sending Martin's car flipping and doing minor damage to Sherman's car. Sherman went to the work station where his crew made hasty repairs and he joined the field running in the 17th position.

As he had done all year long Sherman used the high groove that the rest of the field left open and set sail toward the front. Bobby Boone took the lead from Brian Hacker on the second lap but gave way to Bob Ream, Jr. on the ninth lap. Ream, the 1998 champion, stayed on the low side as Sherman moved through the field. A yellow flag on the 15th lap helped Sherman close the gap and he claimed second a lap later.

Sherman was riding the rim on Manzy's one third mile track and shot into the lead on the 20th lap. Ream managed to make it a race as he dogged Sherman's every move and finally moved to the top of the track on the final lap. Traffic slowed Sherman allowing Ream to make a last ditch try for the win but he fell .0444 seconds short of getting his second win of the year.

For Sherman it marked his tenth win of the season and he increased his points lead as second ranked Josh Pelkey finished fourth behind Jeff Henry. Third  ranked Matt Rossi, fourth ranked Nathan High and fifth ranked Martin were the first three cars out of the race.

Mike Leslie made a run from the sixth row to finish fifth. Marty Miller, the 2000 driving champion, was sixth ahead of Boone, Bernie Smith, Chris Bonneau and Hacker.

With 35 cars checking into the pits the semi main had 18 cars lined up to battle for four main event berths and Rossi survived a rash of yellow flags to take the win over Jay Ervine, Trey Deane and Seainn Hendricson.

High scored his first heat race win of the year as he beat Cole Houser, Pelkey and Steve Sandrolini in the first eight lapper. Henry held off Miller, Ream and Chris Bonneau in the second heat. The third heat went to Boone over Hacker, Leslie and Mike Bonneau. Sherman had the pole in the fourth heat and outraced Martin, Andy Reinbold and Bernie Smith for his 13th heat win of the season.

Sherman got his night off to a good start with a win in the trophy dash on his way to his second straight clean sweep.
