HOW MUCH IS THE FINE FOR GRAND LARCENY?

Phoenix, AZ (May 7) Jeremy Sherman and a race stopping red flag on the
15th lap combined to keep Mike Martin from scoring his first ever Arizona Sprint
Car Association feature race win Saturday night at Manzanita Speedway. Martin
had a commanding 5.71 second lead when a multi car crash brought out the red
flag and the field bunch up for the restart. Sherman was running fourth behind
Martin, Josh Pelkey and Matt Rossi. Sherman quickly disposed of Rossi but was
still running third with five laps remaining. Pelkey tried to make a low line
pass on Martin and Sherman shot to the outside to claim second.
Sherman repeatedly attempted to make the bottom of the one third mile track work
but Martin was still in front at the white flag. Sherman drove it in deep in
turn one and had the lead coming off turn two and took the checkered flag in
front of Martin for his fourth win of the year. Pelkey was third, Rossi fourth
and Nathan High fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Jay Ervine, Bobby Boone,
Jimmy Drinan, Thomas Ogle and Seainn Hendricsen.
The crash took out the cars being driven by Marty Miller, the 2000 driving
champion and Ben Gregg with cars driven by Andy Reinbold and Bobby Boone able to
continue. At about the same time Ervine made a pit stop which put him at the
back of the field but he drove his way back to a strong sixth place finish.
Sherman's status for the Saturday night race was in doubt after ASCA officials
notified him on Friday that he was suspended and put on probation for alleged
rough driving in the April 30 race. His owner also faced disciplinary action.
They appealed the decision and await a hearing. Now they may wonder what the
fine is for grand larceny after Sherman stole the main event from Martin.
Reinbold scored his first ever heat race win as he beat Shon Deskins, Miller and
Drinan in the first eight lapper. Bernie Smith also added his name to the heat
race winner's list with a win over Martin, Tim Beal and Ervine. The third heat
produced a runaway winner as Pelkey easily outdistanced Jeff Henry, Mike Leslie
and High. Sherman stayed perfect in heat race competition as he went wire to
wire in the final heat. Boone, Bob Ream, Jr. and Buddy Earle trailed. The race
was halted at the halfway point when Boone, Ream, Chris Bonneau, Bugs Norbury
and Scott Pasmore crashed.
Rossi had traffic problems in his heat and had to rely on a good finish in the
semi to make the feature. He won going away to earn a 9th row berth. Rookie
driver Thomas Ogle, Hendricsen and Ben Gregg also transferred.
Rossi became the first repeat trophy dash winner as he beat Henry, Sherman and
Leslie. While Sherman has been unbeatable in the heat races and is four out of
seven in main events he has run six dashes without scoring a win.
