Madera,
CA – July 23, 2005 – Rising Sprint Car star, Jessica Helberg, driving
the beautiful flamed burgundy # 4 Beast/Chevy, continues to race up front in
only her 10th race in a Sprint Car.
Helberg impressed fans and fellow drivers alike with her best show yet,
starting 5th and leading 9 of the 40 laps and nearly winning her
first Sprint Car series main event at Madera Speedway.
Helberg,
after posting fast time during last weekend’s 75 Lap race at Ukiah Speedway,
arrived in
Madera
this week looking for her first Main Event victory with the California Asphalt
Sprint Car series. Posting fourth
fast time, Helberg was eager to compete in the evening’s 40-lap feature event.
At
the feature green flag drop, Helberg started fifth, and dueled past fellow
drivers with her sights on second place fellow-rookie of the year contender,
Nick Green. After a smooth and very
clean passing effort moved her into second, Helberg chased down Glenn Hopper for
the lead. As she closed in, she
found herself positioned between two veteran drivers, Hopper and former USAC
champion, Jeff Gardner. In an
assertive move in turn-two, she took the lead from Hopper for the first time on
lap 31.
Helberg
immediately opened up a solid lead going into the final rounds of the 40-lap
main event; she was now faced with an air leak in her left rear tire.
She began fighting a progressively loose car while 2nd place
Gardner
moved to her rear bumper on the last lap, looking for an opportunity to take
the lead. Regrettably, in turn two,
on the last lap,
Gardner
went the outside, Helberg, holding on to the loose #4 machine, suffered a spin
resulting in
Gardner
getting the win.
Helberg
said, “Overall, I was happy with my performance, we
just came up short this time. We’ve
been getting better each race and I am looking forward to challenging for the
lead in
Carson City
next week.”
The
thrilled fans swarmed the car and Helberg after the race offering praise.
One fan told Helberg, “It’s not that you’re a girl, you are fast
and an incredible driver. You obviously have what it takes, showing no fear
going around the track at those top speeds with
Gardner
.” Another said, “We don’t
usually see drivers run up front with
Gardner
like you did. We can’t wait till you come back to
Madera
, you put on one heck of a show!
