JULY 30, 2005 - Chowchilla, CA...Jerry Kobza of Folsom celebrated his 3rd
feaure win of the season with a victory at Chowchilla Speedway's 1/3 mile track
on Saturday, July 30. Kobza powered his Red Line Oil sprinter into the lead on
lap 4 from a 2nd row start, passing West Sacramento's Phil Peddlar and Scott
Pierson, and took the lap 20 checkered flag followed closely by Peddlar, Contra
Costa Auto Parts' Keith Shipherd, Sierra Tow's Sam Fries, and Harris Decal's
Steve Nelson of Jackson.
The CSRA Wingless Sprint teams made the 3 hour tow from the Sacramento area to
race at Chowchilla Speedway on another July scorcher. Several teams had also
raced Friday night at Chico to support the Wingless Sprint effort there. The
track was well watered as Promoter Tom Sagmiller and crew have been diligently
working in new clay to improve
the track. Joining the Wingless Sprints were the Bay Area Dwarf cars, Hobby
Stocks, Mini Stocks, Ladies races and the entertaining kid's lawn mower races.
Congratulations to young Jacob who took the win in a field of 15 kids pushing
decorated lawn mowers down the front straight.
Two heat races ran caution free with Ramos Oil's Gary Koster taking the 1st heat
win. Pole starter Doug Brewer of Livermore took the point at the green and led
til a complete 360 spin stirred up a cloud of infield dust in turn two. Emerging
from the dust, Koster led with Citrus Height's Patrick Russum in 2nd and Larry
Nelson of Valley Springs rounding out the top 3. Heat two ran flag to flag with
pole starter Billy Garcia of Sheldon taking the win. Sam Fries and Shipherd had
an exciting battle for the 3rd spot going on, running cleanly side by side for
an entire lap, and at the checkers it was Garcia, Tony Silvera, and
Shipherd in the top 3. The trophy dash lineup changed some as both Koster and
Larry Nelson decided to rest up, and Patrick "Hot Rod" Russum took the
dash win over Silvera, Shipherd, and Garcia.
With a 12 car inversion for the main event, Elk Grove's Scott Pierson and Phil
Peddlar started on the front row with Jerry Kobza and Chico's Don Emery behind
them. At the green Pierson took the lead with Peddlar and Pierson close on his
tail. Kobza powered past Peddlar and a lap later overtook Pierson for the lead,
with mid pack starters Fries,
Shipherd, and Larry Nelson quickly on the move. Back row starters Doug Brewer
and Gary Koster gained several positions but seemed hampered by the dust from
the lead cars. Fries and Shipherd both slipped under Pierson and then Shipherd
passed Peddlar for 2nd when the sole caution came out for a spin on the slick
track. Action picked up again as Kobza smoothly led the tight lead pack, and at
the checkerd flag it was Jerry Kobza, Phil Peddlar, Keith Shipherd, Sam Fries,
and Larry Nelson in the top 5.
Fans from the stands came down afterwards, children armed with autograph sheets
for their favorite Sprint Car drivers to sign, and many teams lingered to visit,
celebrate, and enjoy the cooler evening temperatures. It was great to see a
night of exciting clean racing with no accidents. CSRA racing action continues
on Friday August 5 at Sacramento Raceway.
