JULY 1, 2005 - SACRAMENTO, CA....CSRA's defending champion Global
Investments' Billy Garcia of Sheldon
scored his first '05 season feature win in the club's 5th point race on Friday
July 1 at Sacramento Raceway's 1/4 mile oval track. Garcia came from a 5th
starting spot and throttled into an early lead with Folsom's Jerry Kobza and
Scalvini Tires' Josh Jacobo of Willows close behind for the 2nd and 3rd spots.
The race was earmarked as an alumni celebration to honor the special people in
the Central State Racing Association who 50 years ago paved the way for today's
racers. Many current club members were active drivers in the early years when
the club was the sanctioning body at Roseville, Auburn, Grass Valley,
Placerville, and West Capital
Speedways. Billy Garcia's father Manuel was a photographer at West Capital in
the 60's, and Garcia's car owner Bob Dias's father John was an official. They
and many others shared memorabilia from the early years: from an old West
Capital gate sign to vintage official shirts, programs, photos, and good racing
stories. For this race it was fitting
that the BCRA Vintage Midgets and Midget Lites were included in the program, and
they put on an awesome display of racing.
The first Wingless Sprint heat race featured first time driver Jeramy Moore from
Placerville in the beautiful Wayside Lumber car he shares with Gary Lewis. Josh
Jacobo took the win with Tim Sherman from Citrus Heights and Orland's Greg
Higginbotham taking the 2nd and 3rd spots. Billy Garcia won heat 2 from a pole
start followed by Red Line Oil's
Jerry Kobza and Rods R Us'Patrick Russum. Josh Jacobo started in the back of the
trophy dash with some serious challengers and did a phenomenal job of driving to
take the win.
The 20 lap feature began with rookies Patrick "Hot Rod" Russum and RJB
Engine's Greg Higginbotham on the front row. Russum took the point for several
laps with Garcia on his tail followed by Jacobo, Kobza, and Santa Rosa's Jack
Clark. Action slowed for Moore's spin which collected Elk Grove's Scott Pierson
and Doug Emery. Emery was unable to continue racing and pitted. After the
restart Garcia made the charge for the lead with Jacobo and Kobza sliding in
behind him. Around lap 15, 5th running Jack Clark's Midas sprinter unfortunately
began to fade with suspected mechanical problems. Jacobo challenged Garcia on
the last lap and a slight bobble cost him the 2nd spot as Kobza dove past him
for an exciting duel to the finish. At the checkers it was Garcia, Kobza, Jacobo,
Russum, and Don Emery in the top 5. CSRA action continues with a doubleheader
weekend of racing on Friday July 15 at Sacramento Raceway and Saturday
July 16 at Chowchilla Speedway.
