MAY 1, 2005....Doug Brewer from
Livermore
scored a victory in the 20 lap feature at Chowchilla Speedway on Saturday,
April 30, taking the early lead from pole starter Burrows Oil Don Emery from
Chico
. This was the second appearance for the dual Wingless Sprint club shows at
Chowchilla, and Brewer’s first race on the fast 1/3 mile track. Brewer was
chased to the checkers by Sierra Tow’s Sam Fries of Sacramento,
Modesto
’s Ed Amador, Hester Roofing’s Scott Pierson, and Rio Linda’s Rick
Eversult.
Twenty one Wingless Sprints made the tow to Chowchilla, and
for many of the CSRA drivers this was their second race in a back to back
weekend. The Jacobo and Emery teams from Willows and
Chico
bunked with friends to shorten their weekend drives, and several spent a late
night in Richard Basden’s RJB Engine shop making repairs and adjustments after
the first point race at Sacramento Raceway on Friday night, to prepare for
tonight’s Chowchilla “thrilla”.
Friday night’s racing action was dominated by sixteen
year old Patrick “Hot Rod” Russum from
Citrus Heights
. The young rookie driver swept the show and scored his first Wingless Sprint
career wins in the heat race, trophy dash, and the 30 lap feature on the ¼ mile
track.
Several new faces and cars were welcomed for this
evening’s race at Chowchilla: Matt Fontaine from Rio Linda in his beautiful
Skippersparty.com car,
Livermore
’s Doug Brewer who has raced wingless injected 360’s before, Larry Nelson
from Valley Springs who recently moved up from the Sprint 100’s ranks, and
Dave Kinnard from
Citrus Heights
. Kinnard, an experienced Wingless Sprint driver has been recovering from a
shoulder injury and this was his first time back in the seat in over a year.
Vacaville
’s Steve Stein was driving a totally different car, this one his back up car
which he fondly referred to as the “log splitter”.
The evening started off with a drivers meeting and a
prayer, and soon after the three 8 lap heat races began.
Concord
’s Burt Siverling and Steve Stein shared the front row, with Stein taking the
point at the green. Sam Fries put the pressure on quickly and made an inside
pass for the lead on lap 4. Keith Shipherd overtook Stein for the second spot on
lap 7. Fries took the checkers first with Shipherd on his tail, followed by
Stein, Siverling, Kinnard, and
Napa
’s David Goodwill. Goodwill struggled with unfortunate engine problems all
evening. Rio Linda’s Rick Eversult charged into the lead from a pole start in
heat 2 and led the entire race, followed by
Citrus Heights
’ Tim Sherman, Doug Brewer, Scalvini Tires’ Josh Jacobo, Mike Zarevich,
Jackson’s Steve Nelson, and Matt Fontaine from Rio Linda. Hale Lumber’s Rob
Hammond throttled into the lead in heat 3 and blazed his tires to take the win
with a large lead over Wadco’s George Terry, Don Emery, Hester Roofing’s
Scott Pierson, and Global Investments’ Billy Garcia from Sheldon.
The six lap trophy dash was a first career dash victory for
sophomore driver Rob Hammond, and the smiles were abundant.
Hammond
, an ’04 season Rookie of the Year has proved to be a quick learner as well as
a smart driver, and we all shared his happiness for the win. He was chased to
the checkers by Sierra Tow’s Sam Fries, Contra Costa Auto Parts’ Keith
Shipherd, Rick O’Shea Motorsports Rick Eversult, George Terry, and Tim
Sherman.
After an accident free evening of fast flag to flag racing
action, the 21 car field of Wingless Sprints lined up for the feature, but
before the first lap was in, the racing stopped for Mike Zarevich who ended up
on the front straight wall. He was alright but unable to continue racing. Dave
Kinnard also pitted with some mechanical problems.
Livermore
’s Doug Brewer took the early lead and was pressured by Emery and Fries. A lap
4 yellow for a spun car slowed the action, and Brewer held his lead as Fries
throttled into the second spot. Another yellow came on lap nine for a spin, and
Fries continued to dog Brewer on the restart. Pierson, Eversult, Amador, and
Jacobo jockeyed for positions as many struggled with the dry slick track. Brewer
skillfully took the win with Fries a close second, followed by Amador, Pierson,
and Eversult in the top five.
The CSRA Wingless Sprints thank Chowchilla Speedway for
their awesome hospitality and will return again to the track in July. The next
CSRA race will be at
Sacramento
Raceway
Park
on Friday May 20 and will also feature the BCRA Midget Lites. Drive safe, take
care, and have fun.
