September 17, 2005 - Rip Williams, of nearby Yorba
Linda, won the Valvoline USAC/CRA 30 lapper at Perris Auto Speedway this week to
move with-in two of tying all time leader Dean Thompson for most victories on
the west coast. Rip drove the John Jory Corporation – Weld Wheels, Stinger,
Shaver # 3, to overcome early leader, Cory Kruseman, on lap 21 and pulled away
for his second win of the season. It was his 8th USAC/CRA win along with 61 SCRA
wins and 32 CRA wins from the Ascot days for his 101 total.
In perhaps one of the most exciting races of the year, any
one of the top five could have won this race as they mixed it up lap after lap.
Cory got sideways on one lap and with Rip so close they banged together, thus
straightening the leader out and they continued on. The Ripper took charge
midway in the race and left them to fight for second. In the process he
increased his point lead over Damion Gardner to 55 after Gardner had two flat
tires in separate incidents and was out early in the race.
Charles Davis Jr was the runner-up for the second race in a
row after battling with teammate Rickie Gaunt like the week before. Super Rickie
was in the thick of it until he dropped to 12th the last few laps
with an injured motor. After leading 20 laps, Kruseman settled for third with
Danny “Showtime” Sheridan lighting up the track for fourth followed by Mike
Spencer. With a few laps to go Sheridan’s motor became a light show as it was
losing cylinders, but it held on to the checkered flag.
Rookie Ryan Devitt had his best outing so far this season.
He made his first main event starting last on the grid and finishing tenth for
the hard charger award of the week. Jerry Coons Jr came in from his National
USAC schedule to drive the Alexander Trucking # 4 car after Mike Kirby left the
team last week, and was seventh coming from his 16th starting spot.
Kirby will have a new car coming out in two weeks. Bill Rose, also a National
USAC runner, drove his own car to 13th as he dropped in for the week
also.
Wally Pankratz
continued his “fairwell tour” in racing by jumping in the Ripper’s back-up
car this week. He put on a good show until he pulled in early in the Semi and
was done for the night. He plans on returning to run at least one more race as
he celebrates his recent 60th birthday. There were 39 cars in the
pits this week as many prepare for the upcoming Oval Nationals at the PAS.
USAC/CRA will race in Phoenix Arizona this coming Saturday
night at Manzanita Speedway.
