MAY 9, 2005...Damion
Gardner of Concord, Calif. hopes to be the first driver to record
back-to-back-to-back Valvoline USAC/CRA Sprint Car feature wins. He has that
opportunity this Saturday night when the series returns to Perris (Calif.) Auto
Speedway.
Gardner, who won at Perris April 30, caught Mike Kirby on the white-flag lap
Saturday night at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway and led the final two laps in his
Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply/Arizona Race Mart Eagle/Shaver to beat Kirby,
Cory Kruseman, Blake Miller and Mike Spencer. The win solidified his
fourth-place series ranking, only 50 behind leader and defending champion Rip
Williams.
Kirby,
who led the first 28 laps, ranks second to Williams, only 30 back, while Charles
Davis, Jr. is third, 34 in arrears. Williams was Saturday night's fastest
qualifier.
No
driver has yet strung together three consecutive USAC/CRA victories, though
Gardner and Kirby each scored back-to-back wins last year.
