(Chico,
CA 10-16-05)…Sacramento’s Herman Klein won the 40-lap First Annual
Non-Wing Spec Sprint Car Nationals at Silver Dollar Speedway on Saturday night.
Klein driving for car owner Matt Fontaine in the Ballou Motorsports/
theskipperpartys.com, Family and Friends, Jessie Heating and Air #40x took the
lead from earlier race favorite Darrell Hanestad on lap 25.
Klein went on the lead the final 15 laps with ease and was very emotional
in victory lane when he said, “I just need to thank Matt and the crew and all
the help we received this weekend to make this possible.”
This was a total team effort that included too many people and sponsors
to list in one article. Hanestad
finished second and upstart Matt Streeter finished third.
A total of 48 drivers returned for the second night of racing.
For his win, Klein pocketed the $2,500 payday.
Hanestad started in the outside of row three but when the field came by
to put one lap in the record books, it was Hanestad who was leading.
After such a strong charge on the first lap it seemed almost likely that
no one was going to get around the 12-time main event winner this season.
Hanestad continued to extend his lead over Herman Klein, Ryan McDaniel
and Doug Brewer.
Yellows were needed on lap three, five and fifteen involving six
different drivers. During the
restarts Klein was able to hang with Hanestad but never challenge for the lead.
On lap 24, Hanestad went into turn one and while exiting turn two bobbled
and allowed Klein the chance to sneak by on the bottom.
Klein came back around as the leader on lap 25.
The final caution waived on lap 34 when Dennis Fraser parked it in
between turns one and tow. During
this long green flag stretch a couple drivers were on the move.
Eighth place starting Matt Streeter moved into the third spot and was
gaining on the leaders. Chuck
Gurney Jr. started deep in the field in 18th spot but quickly moved
into the top ten. He had a set back
on lap 22 when he and another driver banged wheels sending Gurney back to 13th.
He regrouped and would finish in the eighth spot, not a bad weekend for
his first time ever in a non-wing sprint car.
Yet, the biggest mover and shaker was Steven Williams.
Williams transferred from the B main and was slated to start in the
seventh position, however, he was late to the racetrack for the main event and
he was sent to the back. He lined
up in the 22nd spot and drove up to a fifth place finish.
Up front Klein led the final few laps.
Hanestad was close to Klein but never able to make a charge past the
leader. Klein crossed the finish
line with a three-car length advantage over Hanestad.
Streeter finished third. Brewer
drove a solid race to finish fourth. Williams
was fifth. Ryan McDaniel did an
excellent job and finished sixth. Bob
Newberry finished in sixth.
Streeter won the B main event. Williams
was second. Patrick Russum finished
third. Last night’s winner Jim
Perry Jr. placed fourth. The final
two transfer spots went to Jake Serven and Joshua Tucker.
Sixty-eight year old Phil Pedlar wins the C main event.
Following Pedlar into the B main event was Jerry Cisco.
Bob Newberry, Justin Funkhouser, Klein and Gurney Jr. were all victorious
in heat race action.
Hanestad was the fasted in qualifying turning a 14.012.
It broke the previous track record turned the night before by Gurney Jr.
at 14.839.
