(Chico, CA 10-14-05)...Concord driver Jim Perry Jr. won the
opening night of the inaugural Non-Wing Spec Sprint Nationals at Silver Dollar
Speedway Friday night. An exciting opening night of racing saw 57 drivers sign
into the pit area of John Padjen's Silver Dollar Speedway. Perry Jr. won the
20-lap main event over Darrell Hanestad.
The night started off with Livermore driver Chuck Gurney Jr. setting the
quickest lap in qualifying. Gurney Jr. turned a 14.839 and it will serve as the
all-time track record because this division of cars had never qualified at the
speedway. It also was impressive to watch Gurney Jr. get quick time because it
marked his first time in a non-wing sprint car.
Twenty-two drivers started the main event. Merced's Steven Williams led the
first few laps of the race. A few cautions and a red flag slowed the early part
of the main event. On a lap three restart, David Goodwill drove around Williams
in turn one and took the lead. Goodwill survived three restarts as the leader
but on lap 12 he drifted a little high allowing Clayton's Darrell Hanestad to
pass for the lead. Going into the next turn Goodwill ran up and over Hanestad's
tire. It caused Goodwill to lose three positions. This moved Perry Jr. into the
second spot. For the next three laps Hanestad and Perry Jr. raced sided-by-side
in what was one of the most fiercely contested three laps of racing that was
seen all season at Chico. On lap 15, Perry Jr. was able to take sole possession
of the lead. Another driver in the mix was Matt Streeter of Lathrop. Streeter
actually moved along side of Hanestad when the two banged wheels. Streeter got
the short end of the stick and spun around. He did not finish the race. Perry
Jr. led the final two laps to win the $1,000 main event. Hanestad finished
second. Goodwill came back to finish third. Fast time qualifier Gurney Jr.
finished fourth. Early leader Williams finished fifth.
Gurney Jr. won the B main event. Gurney led all 12 laps for the win. Gurney was
placed in the B after a magneto failed in his earlier heat race and he did not
start. Herman Klein of Sacramento finished second. Paradise driver Justin
Funkhouser was third. Concord's Bill Macedo was fourth.
Chris Magoon led all 10 laps to win the C main event. Scott Holloway finished
second. Holloway won the D main event, which was eight laps, and then raced
through the C main to get the transfer.
Heat race winners included Korey Lovell, Hanestad, Bob Newberry and Patrick
Russum.
