CHICO, CA (10-11-05) - Indiana driver Bud Kaeding is one of the many
recent entry’s received for this weekend’s first ever non-wing nationals
event at Silver Dollar Speedway. Kaeding grew up in the San Jose area with his
father Brent and brother Tim, but while they stayed to follow their winged
sprint car passion, Bud ended up moving to Indiana and racing non-wing sprint
car events with U.S.A.C. Bud will race in a U.S.A.C event held Wednesday night
in Charlotte, NC. He is then scheduled to fly into Reno, NV on Friday morning
where he will be transported to the races on Friday night. Bud is just the
latest of many local familiar faces that have entered this race. Also joining
the list is Australia native Peter Murphy. Fresno, CA is Murphy’s home in the
States. He has teamed up with local car owner Mike Funkhouser of Paradise in the
family owned #2. Murphy has won his share of non-wing sprint car raced down in
Central California this season and has a ton of experience racing at Chico.
The two-day show will offer over an $18,000 purse. On Friday night the main
event winner will receive $1,000. On Saturday night, the main event winner will
win $2,500. Just to start the A main, a driver will earn $150.00. There will be
22 spots available for the Saturday night final race. Second place will pay
$1,800 and third will pocket $1,200. In all, $11, 350.00 will be up for grabs in
the Saturday night main event.
The format will be similar to the Silver Cup Race of Champions that is held
in March at the Speedway. Friday night all cars will qualify and run in heat
races. The fastest 20 qualifiers will race in an invitational main event.
Saturday night will feature main events only. This format is subject to change
as the race approaches if necessary.
Auburn’s Andy Forsberg is also scheduled to appear in Mark Orth’s #24.
Forsberg recently finished third in the Fall Nationals at Chico and has many
years of non-wing experience. Yuba City’s Korey Lovell is entered to drive a
car owned by Paul Hawes. Lovell won a feature event at Chico this season and ran
very strong in the recent Fall Nationals race. Sacramento’ s Herman Klein is
also slated to appear in a car owned by Matt Fontaine. Klein has already won a
non-wing main event at Chic earlier this season. Petaluma’s Randy Lathrop
experienced bad luck this past weekend and has entered a car owned by Jack
Clark. Hopefully his racing luck will turn around this weekend.
Darrell Hanestad leads series regulars that provide incredible racing action.
Hanestad, from Clayton, has been the series most consistent winner. Hanestad’s
biggest win of his career came at Chico when he won the Gold Cup Race of
Champions in the late 80’s. Grass Valley’s Jay Youngman and Livermore’s
Doug Brewer have each scored top ten finishes at Chico this year. Napa driver
David Goodwill is also someone who will contend for the title.
Local contenders include Paradise’s Justin Funkhouser, Marysville’s Ryan
McDaniel and Chico’s Sean Young in the Ashley Furniture sponsored #7x.
