CHICO, CA (4-5-05) - Three sprint car drivers sit atop the Feather Falls
Casino, in Oroville, Friday night point championship series. Auburn’s Andy
Forsberg, Oroville’s Sean Becker and Eugene, Oregon’s Roger Crockett are all
tied for the lead of the 410-sprint car championship. Durham’s Mike Sohnrey
leads the dirt modified point standings and Marysville’s Phil Shelby is the
man to beat in the pure stock battle after week one.
Four divisions will highlight this Friday night, April 8th, as the spec
sprint class will join the three regular divisions. 410-sprint cars, dirt
modifieds and pure stocks will continue their season long battle while the spec
sprint division makes it’s first of six appearances this year.
Pit gate is set to open at 4 p.m. Front grandstand gate will open at 6 p.m.
Adult prices are $10.00, juniors and seniors $8.00 and children $4.00. Sprint
car qualifying is slated to stat at 7 p.m. with racing to follow.
A large number of sprint cars attempted to qualify on opening night of
racing. In all, 31 sprint cars where able to time in. It marks the biggest
opening night to the season in recent memory and this patterns looks to continue
throughout the rest of the season. A lot of good talented drivers and teams have
committed to run the entire Friday night series, which should be better and
stronger than past years.
The dirt modified season opener saw 23 cars make the start of the main event.
It was an unusual but welcomed sight among fans and drivers a like in this
popular series. Sohnrey didn’t seem to mind all the competition as he easily
cruised to the victory and the point lead. Two-time champion Ryan McDaniel was
forced to watch the race from this infield with a wrecked racer. His father had
a good night and now is in the second position while fellow family member Duane
Cleveland started off the year on the right foot and is third in points.
Phil Shelby was an interesting surprise in victory lane for the pure stock
division. Heavy hitting Andy Aust of Marysville and Chico’s Phil Marino were
pre-season favorites that didn’t get it done on Friday night. Marino did get a
top five finish but Aust ended the night on the infield with mechanical woes.
The biggest growing open wheel sport seems to be the spec sprint division.
This class offers a less expensive route into open wheel sprint car racing. The
added excitement of non-wing racing has made this division very popular with
traditional sprint car fans and drivers. Close side-by-side racing and shear
bravery lead will make fans out of many who attend the races on Friday night.
