– Carson City, NV. Reigning California Asphalt Sprintcar Association and
Nevada State Champion, Nick Rescino, Jr. opened the 2005 Nevada State Sprint Car
Championship Series with an impressive, come from behind win over an outstanding
19 car CASA field at Carson City’s Champion Speedway. Les Kynett’s venerable
high banked quarter-mile speedway hosted an outstanding “Salute to Indy” by
treating a large crowd to CASA’s traditional 100 lap sprint car main event and
an equally entertaining preliminary 50 lap BCRA midget event complete with a
historic nod to this type of racings roots, an exhibition by BCRA’s Vintage
division.
Qualifying
action saw track record holder Brian McClish just miss lowering his own speed
mark of 12.170 by posting a stout 12.230 lap to lead all qualifiers. In all, 19
cars took laps to match the largest contingent of CASA cars to take to the
Nevada track. During Memorial Day opening ceremonies, both Rescino and Earle
Stanton took checkered flag laps in memory of two prominent local racing people
who passed away recently, CASA founder and former T-Car Speedway star Mike
McCreary who succumbed to cancer shortly after CASA’s last visit in September
of last season, and local speed shop proprietor Sandi Davis of Davis Motorsports
of Reno who suffered a heart attack Friday morning. Both were remembered this
evening and will long be missed.
The
top six qualifiers were presented on the front straight to draw playing cards
for starting positions in the $100 Dash-For-Cash and while Fresno’s Jeff
Gardner drew the ace to start on the pole, Rescino got the better run from the
outside and held of all challenges to win the dash and the special award
dedicated to the memory of McCreary’s last race win, the trophy dash here last
season at Champion Speedway.
Placerville’s
Joe Hauck and CASA president Scott Clough paced the front row as 18 high-powered
sprinters dove down the banking and streaked past the grandstand to start the
feature event. Clough squeezed ahead to lead the first several laps before Ryan
Baumgartner, in his first sprint car appearance of the year in Hauck’s team
car, seized the point. Ultra close racing, the order of the day for the entire
race, resulted in a mishap on lap 13 involving Stanton, Tony Iacobitti, Gardner,
Glenn Hopper and Jessica Helberg. The race was halted to allow track personnel
to restart all the cars safely. Stanton and Iacobitti made minor pit repairs and
returned, all others involved had essentially just stopped to avoid contact and
continued on the restart.
As
the green flag was again displayed, Baumgartner continued to lead Tom Haxall in
Dan Grode’s #72, youngsters Michael Trimble and rookie Nick Green. The caution
waved again on lap 18 as Haxall’s mount broke something in the rear suspension
and slid off turn one in a shower of sparks, just clipping the end of the crash
wall and ending his evening. On the restart Baumgartner slipped out of the
preferred groove and dropped several positions, yielding the lead spots to
Trimble and Green until Trever Cummins and Rescino got together in turn two for
another caution on lap 46. Both were able to continue without repairs.
Lap
58 saw McClish climb up the left rear of Clough spinning both towards the bottom
of the banking and into local star Amy Barnes path. Unfortunately all three cars
were damaged enough to force their retirement from the event. The race was red
flagged again to clear the track safely, to provide maximum numbers of green
flag racing for the fans, and many teams took the opportunity to add fuel.
As
racing resumed, Trimble, Green and Brad Bumgarner dogged each other relentlessly
within the front three spots and were soon joined by Gardner and Rescino making
their charge back through the field. Jessica Helberg received a bump from behind
which brought out the final caution and set the stage for Rescino’s power
drive to follow. The 2004 CASA Champ was in championship form as he dispatched
Bumgarner, then Green and eventually Trimble to take the lead, which he never
relinquished.
The
battling for positions was far from over as the top nine lead lap cars scorched
around track, darting, diving and taking every advantage they could from one
another. Rescino lead but was closely pursued by Trimble then Gardner who
managed to wrest third from Green late in the go to take shots at Trimble’s
second place spot. Green then had to contend with Bumgarner who hopped to muscle
him back yet another position. Bumgarner’s fifth place #88 was now under
attack by a closing Hopper, Cummins, and Iacobitti, all charging towards the
front after their earlier misfortunes. Baumgartner’s #24 was still in the mix
on the lead lap as well.
As
the laps wound down and the battles raged, Rescino was the first to see the
black and white checks and power past them for a hard fought victory. Trimble
held off third place finisher Gardner for a well-earned second, Green streaked
past the line fourth just behind Gardner’s rear bumper, Bumgarner brought his
mount home in fifth and Cummins slipped ahead of Hopper in lapped traffic in the
final laps to take sixth. Iacobitti ran eighth, and Baumgartner ninth to
complete the 100-lap distance. Helberg completed 98 laps recovering nicely from
two unavoidable incidents to finish tenth.
Earle
Stanton also completed 98 laps for 11th, veteran open-wheeler’s Bob
Beck and Marvin Mitchell completed 97 and 96 laps respectively for 12th
and 13th and Joe Hauck finished 14th after making a pit
stop earlier in the event.
CASA’s
next event will be their first ever visit to Madera Speedway’s one-third-mile
oval after an early season rain out. The “Tire Burning Thunder” of the
California Sprint Cars will be joined by the Madera Speedway supermodifieds.
