(September 24, 2005 - Chowchilla, CA) Peter Murphy raced to a thrilling victory at Chowchilla Speedway in a borrowed car. The transplanted Australian approached his good friend Tommy Tarlton earlier in the week and convinced Tarlton the timing was right to compete against the young guns of SCRA’s 360 wingless division.
Murphy rewarded his benefactor by copping the top prize as he raced past Chad Boespflug on lap 23 of 30. His victory was still in doubt as Boespflug came back with a vengeance; he re-passed Murphy only to have Murphy retake the lead once again, all during lap 24. Murphy’s victory seemed assured with only a handful of laps remaining, but alas, another dilemma. After the white flag was displayed, a three-car crash involving Jonathon Logan, Stan Yockey and Chris D’Arcy in turn one brought out a red flag. Another chance for Boespflug? Not quite. Murphy held onto his precarious lead for a green-white-checkered even though he had to accomplish the feat twice.
After starter Lee Jaskowiak threw what appeared to be the final white flag of the evening, D’Arcy came to a stop in turn four bringing out the yellow for the final time. It was De’ja vu again, as Murphy finally completed the green-white-checkered for his first win of the season. Boespflug held onto second while Danny Olmstead garnered the final podium spot after running in the top three all evening. Rounding out the top-five were Andy Ferris, who started on the outside of the first row, and Steven Williams.
Williams is a story unto himself. The point’s leader started way back in 14th position as a result of failing to transfer out of his heat race. The local area resident (Madera) charged through the field and was up to sixth by lap 11 only to be derailed. He made a bonsai move into turn three attempting to pass two cars at one time, tangled with one and came to a stop in the middle of the turn. On the restart, Williams was placed at the rear of the field but that failed to deter his determination or progress as his worked his way forward. His fifth-place finish enable him to retain the season’s points lead over Boespflug (702 to 665) although it was reduced from an advantage of 56 points to just 37. Williams also received the Hard Charger award for his 14th to fifth-place finish. Murphy jumped from 27th to 18th in the points by virtue of his victory.
Davey Pombo was the “Hard Luck” award recipient of the evening. After qualifying third and winning his heat, Pombo finished third in the dash and was poised for a strong showing in the main. That all came to an abrupt ending on lap six when the Kerman, CA resident lost control of his potent machine at the start-finish line, hit the outside retaining wall and flipped. Fortunately, he walked away uninjured.
The three-car crash (including a flip by Logan) on the white flag during the main didn’t produce any injuries, and surprisingly, all three, Yockey, D’Arcy and Logan restarted the race.
Chad Boespflug captured his fourth Dash of the year in a close battle with Andy Ferris, who was making only his second start of 2005 with SCRA. Boespflug earned a total of three points in the Dash Masters standings but failed to gain any ground on leader Danny Olmstead, who also earned three points. Olmstead has 30 points to Boespflug’s 25.
Heat winners included Aaron Altaffer, Boespflug and Pombo while Murphy topped the qualifying charts with a run of 15.504.
