(August 28, 2005 - Chowchilla, CA) Home field advantage and home
cooking is prevalent in the NBA, NFL and in Major League Baseball, and it
carried over into the SCRA ranks on Saturday night as Steven Williams, a nearby
Merced resident (15 miles), dominated the field in event number 10 of the
season. He not only captured the 30-lap feature, he won the dash as well, and
finished second and third in the two heat races.
By virtue of his dash victory, Williams started on the pole in the
feature and was never challenged, romping to an “easy” victory over Danny
Olmstead. The word “easy” is
really a misnomer, as the slippery track was difficult to negotiate as was
lapped traffic, but Williams was up to the task.
Although two yellows were displayed during the event, bunching up the
field, Williams distanced himself from the field and received the checkers with
nearly a half-lap advantage. Likewise, Olmstead enjoyed a powerful evening with
his second-place finish while winning heat number one, and trailing Williams to
the finish-line in the dash.
While the two front runners were “off and running,” a side-by-side
battle enraged for the third and fourth positions between employee Chad
Boespflug and his boss Richard Harvey. The
two exchanged the spot three times with the youngster slipping into the podium
position with only two laps remaining. This,
despite a 360 degree spin between turns one and two (the second time he has
performed this trick this season) in which he kept his foot on the throttle and
motored down the backstretch. Newcomer Andy Ferris rounded out the top-five in
addition to winning heat number one.
The venue attracted only eight entrants, the smallest number this season,
but they were joined by six cars from NCMA 360 carbureted sprints tagging onto
the rear of the field. Being
out-powered didn’t deter this group and they put on a credible, competitive
performance.
Tyler Spath, who just returned from a Midwest tour where he had a
credible showing, couldn’t get his newly rebuilt motor to fire correctly on
all eight before hot-laps, became overly frustrated, packed his bags and went
home.
With his win, Williams not only joins Boespflug as a
three-time winner on the season, he increased his point’s lead over his rival
from 42 to 56 (654 to 598). Earlier
in the evening, it appeared that the Hanford teenager (Boespflug) would suffer a
huge blow in the points when his machine developed problems after the first
heat, forcing him to withdraw from the second and almost parking him for the
night. The crew worked feverishly
to correct the problem allowing him to finish strongly in the feature.
In the Passing Masters series, Olmstead jumped into the
point’s lead with 27, replacing Boespflug who remains at 22.
Williams jumped into the third position with 13.
