(JULY 23, 2005 - TULARE, CA) Although the on-track battle between
the seasons point’s leaders Chad Boespflug and Steven Williams never
materialized, both drivers still captured the evening’s headlines.
Williams not only dominated the field in the 30-lap main
event, going wire-to-wire from his front row starting position, he leap-frogged
over Boespflug into the points lead as Boesfplug was credited with 12th position
after dropping out. The Merced
youngster was never really challenged as he negotiated the beautifully groomed
1/3-mile track.
Boespflug had fast time and captured heat #1 which would
have added 20 points to his season’s total.
His car was strong and the 17-year-old high school student had high hopes
for the evening’s finale. However,
he burned a piston during the Dash and was forced to retire his No. 98 machine.
Hoping to stay in the hunt, Boespflug hopped a ride in Troy Hovey’s
machine for the main event, which, according to the rulebook, negated the points
he earlier earned. He did however,
receive 29 points for the main.
Sharing the spotlight with Williams and Boespflug was Chris
D’Arcy, who charged from his eighth starting position to the runner-up spot
with a brilliant passing performance, this despite almost spinning out after
minor contact with Danny Olmstead on lap 19.
The two were battling hard for second place as they entered turns three
and four, brushing wheels that caused Olmstead to spin out.
D’Arcy did a 360 spin but kept his momentum and his second position
when starter Lee Jaskowiak displayed the green flag on the restart.
Although D’Arcy was strong, he didn’t have anything for the
front-running Williams. His charge
through the field did earn him the Hard Charger Award.
Once again displaying his overall driving talent, with or
without a wing, Ricci Faria made a last-lap pass of Richard Harvey to garner the
last podium position. It was
similar to his last-lap pass of Jim Richardson to win the June 18th
feature.
While Williams had “things” under control, fierce
battles for third through eighth were developing as Olmstead fought his way back
from his spin to challenge Evan Suggs, Aaron Chaney and Tyler Spath.
He fought his way back to sixth but couldn’t get by Chaney who finished
fifth.
Williams, who earned seven points by qualifying fourth and
nine points for finishing second in his heat, also added 60 points for his main
event win, jumping past Boespflug. He
now leads by 44 points, 577 to 533.
Earlier in the evening, Jonathan Logan captured his first
SCRA Dash Masters event, out-dueling Williams and Todd Hunsaker.
Heat events were taken by Bosepflug and Harvey.
