(MAY 14, 2005 - TULARE, CA) A
DAZZLING DRIVING DISPLAY is the only manner in which one can describe the events
at Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway on Saturday May 14th.
Not only did Chad Boespflug and Davey Pombo thrill the fans with
lead-swapping moves, the balance of the competition was doing the same thing
during the extended 40-lap main event.
When all
was said and done, the 17-year-old “Hanford Hornet” was on the top-step of
the victory podium once again, making it two features in-a-row and three overall
in the young season. Boespflug
started on the pole as a result of his Forest Transportation Dash Masters win,
and technically led wire-to-wire. Technically
is only a term in this case, as lead changes in the middle of a lap are not
recorded.
Before
the lead swapping began, Boespflug raced off to a short lead from the get-go and
was weaving his way through the heavy traffic, resembling the Los Angeles
Freeway system, while the balance of the field staged terrific battles of their
own. Pombo, Johnny Rodriquez, Tyler
Spath and Steven Williams’ waged war for the second through fifth positions,
while Danny Olmstead, Chris D’Arcey, Jim Richardson and Richard Harvey battled
feverishly further back.
During
the heated action, Pombo tangled slightly with another car, lost his momentum
and dropped back to fifth. Undaunted
however, he worked his way back into the second position with some slick moves
of his own.
On lap
21, Jeff Gardner made contact with the turn 1 wall bringing out the yellow.
This allowed Pombo, Rodriquez, Spath and the balance of the field to ride
the tail of Boespflug’s #98 machine. Five
laps later, Boespflug and Pombo swapped the lead twice during the lap before
Boespflug put some space between them. He
seemed headed for an “easy” victory, but his lead evaporated once again when
Rodriquez brought out the yellow 10 laps later with a flat right rear tire after
tangling with Williams.
Once
again Pombo was poised to challenge for the victory and sure enough, made his
move two laps later when he powered into turn 3 on the low side passing
Boespflug. When his (Pombo)
momentum carried him toward the outside wall, Boespflug made the
cross-over-move, regained the lead and received the white flag.
From that moment on, he increased the lead slightly and reached the
checkers with a 4-length cushion over the hard-charging Pombo.
With his victory, Boespflug cut into Williams’ point lead and now
trails by only one point, 328 to 327.
Following
the pair to the line were Spath, Williams and D’Arcey, with Olmstead
Richardson, Carlile, Harvey and Albert Pombo completing the top-ten.
Albert received the “Hard Charger” award after starting in the 20th
position.
Earlier
in the program, Boespflug and D. Pombo set the stage for the thrilling main
event with a duplicate run in the Dash. The
only difference was Pombo started from the pole and Boespflug from the number
five post position. Boespflug moved
his way to the lead halfway through the run only to have Pombo make the move
described earlier, taking a short-lived lead, only to have Boespflug pull his
now familiar cross-over-move to take the victory.
Rodriquez, Spath, Todd Hunsaker, and Williams captured heat events.
