(APRIL 24, 2005) In
a state where gambling is pervasive, Steven Williams gambled on the correct
stagger and tire pressures and it paid huge dividends as he captured SCRA’s
initial main event at Nevada’s Pahrump Valley Speedway.
Starting
from the pole position, Williams led wire-to-wire during the non-stop 30- lapper
but it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. The
Merced, CA resident had to fend off the challenge of Danny Olmstead lap after
lap in a bumper-to-bumper affair. As
the checkers fell, the margin of victory was a scant car length.
Rusty
Carlile, making his second start with SCRA, completed the podium with a third
place finish, followed by Jim Richardson with point’s contender Chad Boespflug
rounding out the top-five. The
balance of the top-ten included Tyler Spath, Richard Harvey, Jay Ervine, Howard
Smith and Brian Schuler.
Mike
Kirby, an early betting favorite who traveled all the way from Southern
California, suffered engine problems and was a DNF, as was Chris D’Arcey.
Rain
greeted the traveling contingency upon their arrival and bets were placed as to
whether the show would be cancelled or not, but when all was said and done, the
races were on. Track management
worked and re-worked the track in between the precipitation and prepared a
smooth, fast clay surface for the visiting club to use.
However, qualifying had to be cancelled after five cars posted times and
the backup “pill draw” was used to establish event positions.
Heat
races were won by Rusty Carlile, Richardson and Olmstead.
Williams captured the Forest Transportation Trophy Dash and while adding
points to his total in the Passing Master Points race, he remains in third place
behind Olmstead and Boespflug.
However,
by capturing the main event, Williams increased his seasons point leading total
over Richardson and Boespflug.
