(MARCH 26, 2005 - CHOWCHILLA, CA) Chad
Boespflug collected his Easter basket of goodies one day early as he captured”
his first SCRA 360 Main Event at Chowchilla Speedway. “Captured” doesn’t
quite describe how the young Hanford resident won the 25-lap feature; he took no
prisoners, leading the rest of the field by as a much as a half-lap until a late
yellow bunched the competitors together.
Danny Olmstead, starting from the pole by virtue of his Dash victory, jumped
into the early lead when the first of only two yellows during the evening,
involving a Daniel Hood spin in turn one, was displayed. During the yellow
period, Olmstead’s quest for victory came to an end when he stopped for
unknown mechanical repairs. Although restarting the event, he was relegated to
the rear and was not in contention the rest of the way.
Boespflug, who was all over Olmstead’s rear bumper prior to the yellow, put
the “petal to the metal” and literally ran away and hid from the field,
increasing his lead lap after lap until the yellow was displayed on the 22nd
go-around. Once under way again, it was easy pickings for “The Hanford
Hornet” as he received the checkers.
While most eye were coveted on Boespflug, a stirring battle was raging for
second and third between Jim Richardson and Chris D’Arcey, who started from
rows two and three respectively. The pair ran nose-to-tail and side-by-side as
they fought for second and at the same time, attempted but to no avail, to keep
Boespflug in sight. When the checkered was unfurled, Richardson prevailed,
followed by D’Arcey, Jonathon Logan and Richard Harvey, who picked up two
spots from his seventh starting position. Action around the beautifully
manicured, smooth track was fierce, keeping the fans cheering throughout.
Leading up to the main event, Olmstead and Boespflug appeared to be the over-all
favorites to collect all the marbles after Olmstead won both the Dash and his
heat, while Boespflug took top honors in his 10-lap heat. Steven Williams, who
started the evening atop the point standings, was fast qualifier but couldn’t
muster a challenge and finished in the sixth position, good enough to remain the
point’s leader over Jim Richardson and Boespflug.
