AUGUST 23, 2004...Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind., who ran short of
fuel while leading at Madera (Calif.) Speedway August 7, made sure he had enough
to outlast Tony Hunt to win Saturday night's 100-lap "Trigueiro
Classic" at the 1/3-mile paved oval.
Lapping all but the top five finishers, Lewis admitted to having a perfect car
for the longest race on the 2004 USAC Western Sprint Car calendar. The race
honored the Trigueiro racing family and Trigueiro fielded cars battled to the
checkered flag, Lewis nipping teammate Hunt. The result is that Lewis owns an
eight-point lead over Hunt going into this weekend's back-to-back races at
Meridian Speedway near Boise, Idaho. A
30-lap feature caps Friday night's program at the 1/4-mile paved oval, while a
50-lapper is planned Saturday night.
Lewis and his Team ASE/Red Line Oil Eagle/Wes-Mar earned nearly $8,000 in total
prize money from the record Western Sprint Car purse of $29,000-plus. He caught
Greg Anderson on lap seven and led the rest of the way despite late-race
pressure from Hunt. Lewis was also the fastest qualifier for the 100-lapper.
Tim Barber, Rick Hendrix, who led the opening lap, and Anderson rounded out the
"top-five" at the checkered flag. Ironically, Lewis and Hunt won the
two Boise features last year and are favorites to repeat in this weekend's
back-to-back events.
