by Dick Jordan
|
AUGUST 2, 2004...Brad Bumgarner of Chico, Calif. will try to protect his
slim lead in the Valvoline USAC Western Sprint Car Series standings this
Saturday night as the series returns to the 1/3-mile paved Madera (Calif.)
Speedway for a complete program of events topped by a 40-lap feature. The
California North Ford Focus Midgets are also part of Saturday night's Madera
program.
Bumgarner leads defending series champion Michael Lewis by only 20 points, with
74 available at Madera. Former series champion Tony Hunt sits just 38 back of
the leader, while Brian McClish is only 55 in arrears in one of USAC's most
hotly-contested point races of the season.
Bumgarner has four "podium" finishes so far this season, including a
feature victory at Tucson, Ariz. His two starts at Madera have produced a third
and a fourth, while Lewis won both previous Madera races.
