JULY 19, 2004...Defending USAC Valvoline Western Sprint Car Champion
Michael
Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. remained undefeated in the state of Washington with
back-to-back feature victories this past weekend at Tenino and Monroe. Lewis won
the series' Washington debut event at East Wenatchee last year.
Lewis and the Western Speed Racing Team ASE/Snap On Eagle/Wesmar dominated at
both tracks, leading all but six of the 80 laps contested. He passed Chad
Nichols on lap two at South Sound Speedway in Tenino Friday night and led the
rest of the way to beat Nichols, Michael Trimble, Tony Hunt and Greg Taylor. On
Saturday night, he passed Randy DuBois on lap six and set sail, leading Brian
McClish, Brad Bumgarner, Hunt
and DuBois to the checkered flag.
Lewis' victories left him just eight points behind series point leader Bumgarner
going into this Saturday night's race at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake
City, Utah, which also afford points toward the 2004 USAC/SLVRA Port O' Call
Rocky Mountain Sprint Car championship.
Mike Baisch leads the USAC/SLVRA standings going into Saturday's race. In four
series starts so far this year he has a pair of seconds, a third and a fourth. A
40-lap feature is on tap at the 3/8-mile paved Salt Lake City oval where winners
so far this year have been Dave Fitzgerald and defending series champion Jim
Waters (twice each).
