DECEMBER 22, 2004...Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif., winner of USAC's
2004
Valvoline "Jimmy Caruthers Award" for spirit and determination,
headlines drivers slated to compete in the December 31-January 1 "Roger
McCluskey Classic" at the brand-new USA Race Park in Tucson, Ariz.
Kruseman won five races on his way to third place in the final 2004 USAC
National Sprint Car standings. Included were wins at Terre Haute, Putnamville
and Haubstadt, Ind., Joliet, Ill. and Perris, Calif. The first was the
prestigious "Tony Hulman Classic," the second and third were during
"Indiana Sprint Week" and the last was in the prestigious "Perris
Oval Nationals."
The Tucson race is USAC's first-ever on New Year's Day, with practice and
qualifying scheduled on December 31 and the feature event on New Year's a
40-lapper on the refurbished 3/8-mile dirt track located just south of downtown.
The track previously operated through 2000 as Saguaro National Speedway.
Kruseman, ironically, competed in 2004 for Tony Stewart Racing. Stewart was
awarded USAC's Roger McCluskey 'Award of Excellence" December 10 in memory
of the former USAC racing champion and official. The presentation was made at
USAC's annual "Champions Night" ceremony in Indianapolis. McCluskey, a
Tucson native, passed away in 1993 and competed in 18 Indianapolis 500s during
his spectacular USAC career.
Prize
money for the inaugural "Roger McCluskey Classic" totals over $22,000,
a record for USAC's Southwest Sprint Car Series operations.
Kruseman's competition is expected to include not only 2003 USAC Southwest
Sprint Car Champion Rick Ziehl and USAC Hawaii race winner Charles Davis, Jr.
but also Arizona drivers Jerry Coons, Jr., Dave Burns and Brandon Lane, as well
as Colorado's Keith Rauch.
The
December 31 activities will include a "Dash for Cash" for the fastest
six Sprint qualifiers offering $1,000 to win. Friday's racing includes the
Sprint Cars as well as pro-stocks, street stocks, and modifieds. Saturday's
events are for Sprints Cars and modifieds. Practice each day starts at 1 pm.
The new
facility is located on Los Reales, east of Alvernon, south of the Interstate 10
Craycroft Road exit.
