NOVEMBER 8, 2004...A contingent of USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series
drivers is headed to our 50th State this week to compete in this weekend's Hawaii Challenge II, the USAC vs. Hawaii "Sprint Car Classic" at Hawaii Motor Speedway. A feature is slated Friday and Saturday nights at the 1/4-mile dirt oval located in Campbell Industrial Park west of Honolulu. The races, due to their invitational "special event" nature, will not offer Southwest Series points. Defending USAC Southwest Sprint Car Champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, N.M. is among the drivers scheduled to compete against Hawaii's top drivers. He'll be joined by 2004 Southwest Sprint Car point runner-up Dave Burns of Santa Fe, N.M., Leighton Crouch of Shallowater, Texas, Charles Davis, Jr. of Buckeye, Ariz., Mike Martin of Yuma, Ariz. and John Carney, Jr. and Sr. of El Paso, Texas. Friday night's feature event is a 30-lapper, while a 40-lapper is scheduled Saturday night. Hawaii's Dean Freitas and Ronnie Clark of Tucson, Ariz. won last year's Hawaii feature events. In related news, Beau Binder of El Paso, Texas has been proclaimed champion of USAC's 2004 Southwest Sprint Car Series as continued construction delays have forced postponement of the opening USAC race at Tucson, Ariz.'s new United Sports Arizona (USA) Race Park. The race originally scheduled November 21 at the 3/8-mile dirt track has been
removed from the calendar but USAC and its participants look forward to the
grand opening of the facility. Binder will be recognized as the 2004 champion at
USAC's National Awards ceremony December 10 in Indianapolis, Ind. |
